Default Engine heat

I know of the methods Harley has implemented on the '09 models to reduce or manage engine heat from the heads, cylinders, and exhaust. I'm a little surprised to find that there is excessive heat coming from the large portion of the engine that sticks out by the left shin. I don't know the right name for this, I think it's the clutch or transmission, but I notice that it sticks out quite a bit which requires a wide stance (for my shorts legs) and that it heats up rather quickly and painfully. So, what is this, why is it so hot, and is there anything to do to minimize it?

Your left shin? Are you referring to the primary chaincase? That shouldn't be so hot that it affects you. You are probably feeling it from the engine itself.

+1 on what dawg said. If you are having that much heat, something is wrong. The primary is warm after a ride, but not painful, unless you leave your hand on their for a whil. If you can take a picture just to verify the location.

Told you don't know the terms, left calf not shin. Chaincase sounds right.

My engine got hot during a recent traffic jam, with lots of starting and stopping and this part got uncomfortably hot to where I had to move my leg. It did cool down quickly once I got moving, maybe it's the heat transferring through the metal, but it was unexpected so I thought I'd ask. The bike is a new '09 with only 500 miles on it so far. Thanks for your comments.

If you're sitting in traffic and don't utilize the EITMS, yes it will feel hot all over.

synthetic oil in all 3 holes and a proper tune will reduce engine temperature.

If your engine is what is burning you check us out we manufacture this heat shield and sell a pretty good number of them. They are a very popular item for us in the warmer climates, and when sitting in traffic. The shield pictured has the additional studs to match a softtail. If we can help you out just let us know.

I finally (just today) put on a pair of those mid-frame heat deflectors. Not doing another summer without 'em.
