2001 Ultra won't start

I am helping a friend with his fuel injected 2001 Ultra that won't start. It has been sitting for 5 years and most of the gas has evaporated from the tank. We put in fresh gas, a new battery and attempted to start with no luck. The only way the bike will fire off is when we spray starting fluid into the throttle body. I am thinking that the electric fuel pump may be stuck/bad. All fuses look good. Any other thoughts/input from the forum would be appreciated. Thanks!

When you turn the ignition on and the kill switch on, can you hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds and shut off?

If yes, filter and pump are probrably ok. Look further down the fuel delivery path.

If pump runs and does not shut off, either the filter is clogged, or the pump is not pumping right. No pressure is being built up.

If it does not run at all, pump inop or no power to it.

Sounds like good troubleshooting technique to me. My guess would be gunk in the filter from the old gas sitting there.

Yea i would check the pump and filter first.....then go to electrical.

Fuel pump not running at all and has 12 volts while cranking. Ordered new pump and filter with hope that that is the only problem. Thanks to all for the input.

I have used Techron fuel injectoion cleaner in some of my previous carb fuel system bikes. It prevented me from having to remove the carbs and do a full clean which is a PITA.
