I assume you speaking of the hard bags....sometime after I have removed mine for cleaning or servicing I find the bags don't latch as securly as before..I open them up, undo the mounting tabs, re-position the bags a little and fasten the mounting tabs...this will usally fix it...give it a try....couldn't hurt.
Don't want to be a smartass but that is my nature. When i bought Ol Sally she had some of those Chinese puzzle lock saddlebags. Where the whole top comes off. And, not in good shape. I bought a set of Police bags off ebay. I like them a lot better. Turn the hockey puck, bag opens and top stays on. No trying to hook the backside of the lid when it is dark or in some cases a little drunk. Not me. I know this does'nt help with the Chinese puzzle bags. Just my smartass opinion. Also glad to find out that I was'nt the only one with that problem.
I would bet you dollars to doughnuts that Bad Pig has already solved your problem in an earlier reply, but I just want to add my 2 cents. This happened to me last summer. I posted here for suggestions and several people said that I was probably closing the lid onto the cloth support that holds the lid when it's open. I didn't believe them, but I went to the garage and checked anyway. Presto, fixo. Never had the problem again. The sure fire sign of this happening is a nice neat crease in the cloth. Just push the cloth away from the lid when closing and it should eventually re-train to go that way. On the rare occasion when the cloth gets caught (like when my bags are over-stuffed) I can now feel the difference in latch tension and correct it before it pops open. When it closes properly, it thumps closed. When the cloth is caught, it just kind of eases closed. The only time I lock my bags now is when I'm parked and I want to secure valuables.
Don't know if mine would pop open if not locked ( 07 Ultra), Never ridden it without the Bags being locked, saw a guy going down the road one time with the bag open and flapping in the breeze, that was enough for me.
Every now and then on my 00EGC my right bag will do it, I have found that I don't have it latched properly. I don't usually lock them while riding, unless it's a long road trip.
I had the same problem, and it progressed to not latching at all. turned out the lock in the unlock position was interfering with it. The dealer fixed it since it was under warrenty.
