This happened to me and it was the spring broke in the hinge. If the spring action is lost you can take the hinge assembly off, use a dremel grinder and remove the weld burr on both ends of the hinge pin. Drive the hinge pin out and recover the broken spring. Many dealerships have a supply of the small parts. Reassembly is a small pita because you have to preload the spring but a couple brews and a little patience gets it done.
