Sorry if this is old news to everyone, but as I understand it, the temps are high because the MoCo needs their bikes to pass more restrictive emissions tests, and generally leaner = cleaner. Unfortunately, it also means hotter. Thus, richer fuel = cooler exhaust. Maybe everybody recognizes that already, but there seems to be an implication that 'HD needs to fix the problem,' and as far as the MoCo is concerned, they're fixing a more serious problem, the emissions problem. The feds haven't decreed a exhaust temp limit (yet), but have set exhaust emissions limits. The MoCo could reroute exhaust as someone suggested, but other than that, it's going to be up individuals/aftermarket for the most part. Unless, as you no doubt have already concluded, the MoCo goes to water-cooled engines to reduce overall radiated heat, and they're putting that off as long as possible, though it sounds like it's in the works.
In talking further with my dealer, all the mods that will need to be done to cool me down some, will give me reduced gas milage and cost over $1000. I think I will put some kind of patch on the inside of my jeans. Man, I hate to spend that and have it not work. Don't ask me exactly what he said...he was talking to hubby over the phone, but it would be rush slip ons, air cleaner and something else. (This is all new to me, so ignorant on what is what.) I know hubby will let me do it, but I want to be reasonably sure it will work.
[QUOTE=poppa cooter;4919721]man these 96's are hot on any year bike i could only imagine what you must be feeling with all that extra weight from being a tri-glide. you will have to add fuel it is the only way to cool these down and even at that it does not do much. i have spoken too 2 good tech's and both have said the heat is due to the stroke of the motor the only thing that can be done is add fuel to the motor and even at that it will still be hot. harley knows these motors are hot they have done some things since the 07's came out like adding plastic guards by your crotch, changing the exhaust they should have ran all of the exhaust under the bike.
Well said and true. Coming from a 80" evolution motor, these 96" motors are HOT. Even with a SERT, AC pipes, oil cooler and fan, this motor is way too hot.Makes me look forward to liquid cooled motors for the touring line. I've owned six harleys but enough is enough.
Makes me dread a stop light.

Again before you spend major bucks. A the screaming eagle air cleaner and stage 1 remap will help with the heat. The operative word here is will just help. Any and all of the changes that are suggested on this board will just help. Stay with the stock pipes first you do not need to change these. Also be aware that changing pipes could also bring about a noise issue that you may find offensive. This should be no more than $400.00. I would not spend any more than that because the heat problem is not going to go away in total
From the sounds you just want to ride your new horse so be careful that any changes could materially change the characteristics of your bike. Harley made some significant changes on the 09 models that in my opinion alot of people on this board have not experienced. In effect what I am saying if I did not have my 09 Road King my response would have been totally different based on my experience with 07 Stret Glide they are that different.

My 96 electra glide was nothing my 08 is hot AF, it has melted two pair of paints this week alone. If my slip it came with is loose at the joint would that cause more heat by my leg?
