i have a 1998 electra glide classic.due to my wifes health i need to add a sidecar.now some people who i consider very knowledgeable, and who have there own shops, tell me that my 80 ci motor will not be enough to haul, myself, bike, sidecar, and wife. that i'll be "stuck" in 4th gear alot.so i figure i'll just add a new motor,i suggested a ultima(heard good things),he said while he loves their cases, there are problems with the rest of the motor.then i suggested a s&s motor,he said WAYtoo expensive.so he suggested a twin cam,and he has a 6 speed case hanging around, and use that(he not in any way working for the factory),and use a fan and oil cooler.sounds like alot of work. BUT i can not afford a new bike as wifes meds have my wallet stretched kinda thin.i'm totally open to suggestions, as my wife just plain ol loves to ride, she just can't sit on the seat behind me. thank you
Ultimas are fine if you dont ride hard, or so I have heard.
S&S make a real tough motor, but you gotta pay for it. I would reccomend S&S over anything, but I am kinda biased.
You can do a fair bit to the 80 cube evo without spending too much. Cams, pipes, maybe a carb and some headwork will make a huge difference. My old Evo only had a thunderslide, air cleaner, pipes and EV26 andrews cam (no head work) and was a fair bit quicker than a stock 88 twin cam.

Harleys have been pulling sidecars since the early 1900s. As I recall the motors back then were only 61 c.i. you have a modern 80 c.i. With the right mods you could seriously boost your HP and easily pull the sidecar.
Why don't you hook the side car up to what you have and see how she does. It might surprise you how well that bike handles the side car.
+1 I agree it would make the most sense to add the sidecar first then see where you are. Using 4th gear a little more is a lot less expensive than a motor upgrade.
My fatherinlaw has an '05 RKC,stage 1 88",sidecar.
With a passenger on a flat road the power is OK.
Once he hits a hill,he is searching for gears.
The fuel mileage sucks also.
