Found it!
I pulled off the front fairing and found a wire that had rubbed on a sharp metal bracket. It was white with a green line...The speed sensor signal wire.

I'm having the same problem with my speedometer. It's not working and my turn signal is not automatically cancelling! I changed my sensor last year.. Could it be damaged again, and if so, what can cause it to become damaged or not operable?

Usually when the sensor starts messing up it also affects the turn signal cancellation and the radio AVC control. If you're having just erratic needle it might be something else, but it wouldn't hurt to at least clean the sensor.

That's good to hear, X2guy. It's nice to find something easy for a change. EASY IS GOOD!

I have an '09 Fat Boy that is in the shop with intermittent speedo stopping. It usually does it when the engine is cold and starts working if i go 10-15 miles. It will also die when I downshift. Not good, especially if it does it when I am letting the clutch out. I have fishtailed and had to go home and change underwear. Since the HD shop is 65 miles away, it is working fine while they are testing it. They can't find anything wrong. This is the second time they have checked it. They are ready for me to pick it up and I am telling them I will just be bringing it back in a couple of weeks when it starts it again.

Anyone have any ideas?
