Default A very specific issue.......

A couple weeks ago, my speedo started acting erratic and then just stopped working. At first I thought the speedo or sending unit might be fouling out but that is not the case. I pulled the fairing and looked for a bad connection...none found. I checked all for good contact and then pulled the cover by my saddle bag under my right butt cheek and checked all connections as well. Speedo worked for a bit. Went riding the other day and it's starting to bounce again. THIS TIME.....I noticed when it would bounce, the volume on my radio decreased and my self cancelling turn signals would self cancel. Have any of you run into this specifically??? What connection should I focus on more??

You've got some type of connector that is loose and/or several pins are bent, indicated by the abnormality when the bike hits a bump. Being an 02, there can be deterioration in any connector. I would start from one end of the bike to the other checking every connector and secure it using di-electric grease. check every pin for integrity. Anything not looking right needs to be rectified. Be thorough or your work will be in vain.....let us know what you find out.

I would check for DTCs. That should narrow down the problem(s) to the circuit(s) you need to focus on. If you don't find any wiring/connector issues, then I'd suspect the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) in the transmission. As for the radio volume and the turn signal part of your problem, I haven't got a clue.

I suggest starting by checking the ground wires in those circuits. A loose ground can cause intermittent failures. The diagrams in the service manual will show all the ground connections. An HD electrical diagnostics manual may also be a good investment.

The self cancelling turn signals function off of the speedometer. When the speedometer is not working no self cancel. You need to start by pulling the speed sensor on the top of the transmission. Just cleaning that may be all you need to do

In my research, it seems the speed sensor needs a good cleaning or replacement. I have a limited detail of where this thing is..... Could someone specify which it is in particular?? I know it is on the trans. but is it the one with the allen wrench head under the hose going to the oil spout or the one a little higher up (towards the right) on the chrome cover???
