Have been following this thread and sure as hell agree the dealer should be stepping up to the plate. What I dont understand is that my 1000 mile service was done at no charge by my dealer and I understand this is a pretty common freebie given on a new bike. in other words, if they were a decent dealer to begin with, they should have been doing the service for you anyway...I'd be looking for another dealer. Good luck with your fix
the link provided by Dawg worked for me earlier, I bought the parts listed but they won't work on 09 trans, not enough room to fit plug, can't get wrench on head of the piggy back bolt. But now you all have me thinking of trying a different method of taping new bolt in. Just doing some searches to see what best way to do myself is, that will not come loose and/or leak.

Just replace the pan.....and be done with it and keep all your reciepts...and also keep calling HD and see if you can atleast get your money back......Keep us informed....If you have questions or need help just ask them here.....you will get them here...
Don't give up, keep going up the ladder at harley. No reason why you can't service your own bike. If you had cross threaded or over tightened on assembly that would be on you, but since it happened on disassembly, it should be on them.
He's right,,,,You can not cross thread a bolt or a screw on removal. If it came out bad it's because it went in bad.
oil change service does not have to be done by a certified mechanic....if thats the case why does it show you how to do it in the owners manual? your dealer sucks IMO
keep us posted on how it works out for ya
stopped at a few stores and it looks like any oversized plug has a 3/4 head and that just won't work in the tight space as no way to get a wrench on the bolt to put back in. Tried NAPA this a.m. and went thru books with parts guy and all had same head size. Gonna make some calls on just getting new pan installed from some local bike mechanics. Still dealing with dealer as well, but now that HD Headquarters has put the redflag up with VIN number and denied claim, they would have to do job for free. I haven't given up on this yet, just if I could have got an oversized plug and moved on it would have been nice.
New pan sounds like the only option to me, re-tapping and or larger plugs (having them leak) lead me to believe that I wouldn't know how many threads or peices of metal fell into the oil pan?? It's a new bike fix it right. I also know you can't really screw up that bad taking out a plug, some one on the assembly line hooked you up. Good luck.
I'm with you on new pan. More I think about it, the more I would worry about it leaking on a bike this expensive is not worth the headache, nor if I end up with trans problems down line they blame on me on a fix up on the pan and metal from threads causing tran problem. I am getting closer to a resolution with dealership and will let you know how it works out.
I really wouldn't accept no for an answer from Harley! My girlfriend had the lining in the gas tank come loose in her Duece. It was barely over her 2 year warranty. The dealer said "no", Harley said "no." She raised holy hell at the dealership on the phone to Harley! She told them things like it wasn't abuse if I only put gas in the tank, it was definatley bad parts or workmanship, (as in your case) and Harley should be ashamed selling poor quality bikes and not standing behind them. She was telling them loudly that she'd never buy another Harley if this is what you get for $18,000. They fixed it and called it "good will." A different dealer replaced my pan for free as I previouly posted. I'd raise hell next Saturday when the shop is full, and do it in service first then ask for the general manager and raise hell in the show room. They'll just want to shut you up. I'm a machinist and could have easily repaired my pan, but I paid for a good one when I bought the bike. They owe you a good one!
