Metzeler ME880 defect

Just found a disturbing problem with my rear tire- MU85 Met. ME880. Pulled the tire to have a new one mounted (7,000 miles on tire) still had some tread but am going on a 4K mile trip in a few weeks so I needed to replace before that but anyway while looking at the tire I noticed on the edge of the tread at the sidewall (sorry no pic's camera broke) on several grooves there was rubber pulling away from the carcass -- in one spot I could see the inner cord and carcass area. A very dangerous defect to be sure. I have run Metzelers for 8-10 years and have never seen this before but you can bet I will be looking alot closer from now on. This was on my 07 EGC
Anyone else have any similar experence like this??

I had a front ME880 look like dry rot on the sidewall a few years ago. Based on that and all the sliding I was doing in the rain I pitched them and went back to the 'Lops.
