Question Any better ideas?

So I am having to tear down and repair my transmission because last fall the drive belt pulley came loose from the final drive gear and trashed it. Not a big deal I like doing my own work. I have had to get a few tools along the way which hasn't bothered me. But here is the other question. I have oil weepage going on at the base of the rear jug. I have been thinking about tearing down the engine and replacing the seal. Of course when you do something like this you have to replace all the seals. I am starting to rethink this a bit. I mean that I am really tired of the mess that is being made on my bike because of it but the work and time thing means a really short riding season and I'm starting to get the itch really bad. So I'm wondering if there is a way to seal this with out having to do an engine tear down? Anybody have a good idea about this? It is for my 98 FLHTCUI.

Common for EVOs to leak. Unfortunalty there is no quick fix. you need to take the engine apart.

Does that mean that even after I do all that I will just wind up leaking again? If that is the case it may not be worth the trouble. Cheaper to add oil every now and then than do all that work and leak again later.

there are probably better quality gaskets available nowadays. i'd use the best available to eliminate future problems with the leaking. cometic and james are a couple of companies that come to mind. the technology is far advanced now from what it was originally built with. just my three cents worth.

If it's just a base gasket leakin' it shouldn't take all that long to fix. You aren't doin' a complete tear down, rebuild. Just pull the one jug off, change the gasket (Cometic metal gaskets are good) & bolt it back together. Better yet, if it's just weapin' wash it off every couple of rides & change both of 'em next winter.

Can I pull the jugs with out having to pull heads and everything? I may just wait till next winter since it is only weeping and not any worse than that. But if I can pull the jug with out having to rip everything else apart then I may as well do it while I have it this far down. Decisions decisions!

A friend had that problem and at 186,000 miles he learned. Just retorque the jugs and ride it. It worked twice for him.

I am going to look hard at this idea. If it can get me through to winter then it will be a much better solution than tearing it apart.

If the leak isn't that bad, just leaving a wet spot I would wait till winter and change both base gaskets, it not that difficult.

Jinks nice one.
