when my stock cap sticks, it's channellocks with wrapping the cap with a shop rag first so you don't mar the chrome. i never bought one of the temp ones as they tell me at the parts counter that it's not important to see the temp, if all is running right. and also they told me that they tend to fail so i bypassed the temptation. but when my cap sticks, i use the channelocks protected with a rag.

Im pretty sure on the 06 it dont screw in, you just twist it back and forth to remove it. Buddys 06 broke as well trying to remove but he soldered it back together...

It doesn't screw screw in on my 02 Ultra, that is why they have the "overengineered" ball and ramp design. That design is what keep it in. Turn it about one quarter turn counterclockwise as you pull it out and you shouldn't have any problems. I think most of them get jammed or broken because some people refuse to read the instructions. If you don't have instructions, as stated above, you can get them at any H-D parts counter. I have had mine for five years and it still works great and has the original battery in it. The chrome cap came off once but it was easily fixed with a little black high temp silicone.

I think there are a couple of different designs out there but I will send you a .pdf of the instructions that came with mine if you PM me your email address.

Give it a turn as you pull it up. It's not threaded but for whatever reason you have to twist as you pull it out.

Press the chrome cap back on and it will stay. Mine did that on the '05 EGC and I'd just push the chrome cap on after putting the dipstick back in. It never fell off.

Well I decided to take it to the dealer and let him show me how its done. As some of you had stated, you give it a quarter turn conterclockwise and then just pull it out. WELL at least that how it suppose to work. They couldn't get it out either. They ended up breaking it off. It was so jammed that they had to take the side cover off the oil tank and pound it out from the inside out (and I mean pound!). Well my pocket is $130 buck lighter I no longer have a $140 dipstick and I'm stuck with an ugly black dipstick(no choice, they had no chrome ones in stock and I'm headed out on the road tomorrow).

When you get back you can buy a chrome axle cover for $3 ? and bend the flanges off and silcone it on.
