Default charging problem??

My '01 RK runs fine, but it seems when I shut it off, the battery acts dead. I can charge the battery and it will be fine for a few days, then it'll be dead again. I charged it last night, and took it to the parts store this morning and had them load test it. It checked out fine. Could I have a charging problem? The bike never dies while running, and I have no codes that I'm aware of. I'm still waiting for my service manual to arrive, to see how best to check everything. Until then, can anyone give me some ideas? Can I check things with a multimeter? Is it like a car, in that I can start it and disconnect the battery to check the charging system? Or might the battery be bad even though the load test said it was okay, and even though it'll take a charge from the charger?

Thanks in advance.

Jimmy

How does it "act" dead? Turn over slow? Has the motor had any work done like a big bore kit?

Tom from http://harleygoodies.com/ here. I would recommend checking your regulator next. They have been known to go out occasionally.

never disconnect the battery on anything when running. the power being made is like a train going down a big hill, you unhook the battery cable and the train stops all at once. trains don't like to stop suddenly. something will burn out. it might not happen the first time but it will happen.

Hey Jimmy I just had to change the voltage regulator on my 01 RK (34000 miles), the first symptom was the starter dragging every time I started the bike, the next symptom was Click click click... if you know what I mean. My local dealer hooked the bike up to a hand held tester and determined the regulator wasn't working, it took about ten minutes and they didn't charge me. Regulator from the dealer was $230 and I did the install myself saving a few bucks. Good Luck

Usually it's click, click, click. Sometimes it'll turn slow, then click, click, click. Bought the bike used a few weeks ago, so really don't know what, if anything, has been done to it internally. Pretty certain it's all bone stock though. The only thing that really looks like has been done to it, is that it has true duals on it. I'm assuming those are aftermarket, 'cause I didn't think the moco put any out with true duals?

That's what I've been kinda thinking too. Can I test it with a multimeter? I wish the damn manual would come in........

Well, I bought a regulator today and put it on. $214. I guess I'll know in the next day or so if it fixed it. My manual also came in, and I picked it up too while at the stealer. I was a little surprised that it doesn't have anything in it as far as trouble shooting stuff. Have to buy another manual for that...... Greedy bastards.
