If you open the bottum of your face shield a little, it usually provides enough ventilation to keep the shield from fogging. If you're riding in a real heavy rain and breathing hard, however, this probably won't work either.
I keep a small shield in with my rain gear to go on my half helmet. Just used it for the first time going to the outer banks two weeks ago. Worked perfectly. Never fogged, although my glasses did but i was able to take them off with the shield. I highly recommend it for highway driving in the rain.
On the way home we hit more rain and quickly stopped on the side of the freeway to put on rain gear and I didn't put my shield on cause it's slow to mount cause it uses screws. Ride was much worse w/o the shield. It was really coming down.
I prefer a short windshield, 7" cause I like some air. Also hate when the tall windshield gets rain cause you can't clean it. With the shield you can wipe it when you want to.
If you are going to carry a face shield just for rain, look for one with an anti-fog coating. Another option besides spit (which works fine) is a very light coating of Lemon Joy dish soap. Keeps the shield from fogging and smells better than spit.
Can you suggest a source for a good anti-fog shield that fits a three-snap half helmet ? I met a guy a few weeks ago that was trying a new shield that reached down past his eyes (nice length) but it fogged up real quick for him.

I've used shields from MXL Industries. in the past. Don't know if they sell direct or not.
I bought some fog off and works but you have to re-apply.. i am ready to order a zero fog visor for my Fulmer...My buddy wears a Nolan and the zero fog seems to work good...Had a Fog city insert ann works ok but distorts the view a bit...
One of the main reasons I put a Tour Pack on my bike was to always carry a full face helmet with me just in case of rain etc. (It's just good to have with you.) Well this past Sunday the weather was 'supposed" to be nice and I left home for a day ride with a group and I didn't bother to put the FF in the box. You guessed it, by the time we hit our destination and departed back for home, it was dark grey with periods of driving rain. It was stinging driving rain and forced me to pull over twice to give my face a rest. Lesson learned! That's why the box is on there and from now on no matter what the forecast, my FF will be inside. I don't mind riding in the rain and have quality rain gear. Add the FF helmet and I'm good to go in any weather. Weatherman sux though.
I ride in rain almost every day, here in sunny Puerto Rico. With the stock 12' windshield and a half helmet and safety glasses it works for me. I ride about 22 miles to and from work on the interstate. Just make sure to use your 4 ways if it's raining hard, it works for me.
I'm with dgriffith. Stock windshield and clear safety glasses (Smith & Wesson's) and not a problem. I'm thinking if the rain is pelting you in the face, your windshield is too short? I also wax my shield (paste, no abrasives) and the water just beads off.
