Default Riding in the Rain

Last year I seemed to be able to predict rain. Every, EVERY, week long trip I made it rained buckets. I ride rain or shine so I thought I should look for some tips from others that might make riding in the wet a bit more comfortable. And Yes, I've got excellent rain gear - pants, jacket, over-gloves, soft lowers - doesn't everybody. <G>

I have found that if I ride too slow in the rain the windshield fogs up making a big white wall in front of me (I can see over it by a couple of inches but then my face is directly in the rain). If I ride faster the rain blows off the windshield and it doesn't fog but speed isn't always a good idea when the rain builds up on the road. <duh> As you know, rain hitting the face is like getting shot by a BB gun and when you have to take your glasses off (fog again) getting shot in the eyes hurts big time. I've seen others post that they ride with a bubble face sheild. How does this work for you? Does it fog easily? What do yoiu use to deter fogging? I have a half helmet - does it cause head shake to ride with the bubble?

What other rainy day tips can you offer?

Spit. Inside your glasses/goggles. Trick from SCUBA diving. You can also get a spray from a Dive store. I ride with a half helmet and glasses and do not have a problem. If you have a cheap pair of glasses just for the rain, apply RainX. They do not recommend to use on plastic but it works.

If you are going to carry a face shield just for rain, look for one with an anti-fog coating. Another option besides spit (which works fine) is a very light coating of Lemon Joy dish soap. Keeps the shield from fogging and smells better than spit.

I've ridden in some pretty hairy situations in the rain, too many to describe. You need additional lighting on the rear of your bike, good tires and a faceshield is a must.

Spit works well, kind of like in a scuba mask. Full face helmet with the shield cracked open will keep the rain from hitting you r face. Good gear to keep you dry. Boots, gloves, jacket and pants. Be careful.

Wear a full face helmet...

The rain hurts a lot less that way.

I had problems with my vision in the rain (fogging and rain getting on the inside part of my lenses etc) till I got a pair of global vision spider goggles.

http://www.amazon.com/Global-Vision-.../dp/B000MT7OSK

They don't fog at all and I think between the goggles and my rain gear most of my face is covered. Made a huge difference.

I just ordered some Cat Crap (not the formerly Friskies kind). They (those who know things) say it works really well for fogging of glasses, face shields etc..
I've got a rainy ride coming up this weekend, so we'll see.

Besides the other methods, there are sprays and clothes to prevent fog in ski goggles that will also work. I got some boot covers that go up to my knees. They are great in keeping the feet dry and only cost $50 (well worth it).

I wear a full face helmet and treat the face shield with some anti-fog stuff my son had for paintball masks. Works great. I left the shield open an inch or so and look over the windshield.
