I recently swapped to a 21/18 aftermarket wheel setup. I had a trusted and proven indie mechanic install a set of black fork legs and change the brake pads while he was at it. When I picked up the bike the mechanic told me the swap went well but explained that he noticed a low humming sound when he applied the front brakes. He told me he'd gone back and double checked everything but couldn't locate the problem. He and I both test rode the bike and didn't notice any loss in brake power. The noise was only heard when the front brakes were applied.
I rode the bike home (about 20 miles) and took a back road so I could test the brakes at various speeds. The brakes work fine and there doesn't seem to be any vibration associated with the noise. The noise sounds like the old front brakes on a ten speed bike. I'm guessing the problem has something to due with the rotors that came with the wheel package. The new rotors are the shiny, chrome like version. Has anyone else experienced problems with noisy brakes or brake pad issues due to this style of brake rotor?
