When I start my 2001 FLHPI, after it has been sitting for a while, I need to twist the throttle slightly in order for it to start. Also, after it starts. if I allow the throttle to go back to the stop, the bike will stall. However, once the engine gets warm it will not stall but the idle speed is still slower than most of the other Harleys that I have listened to. Is there anything I can do to correct this? Are there any adjustments I can make? Recently I had S&S cams etc. installed and the dealer did a HD download. I forgot to tell him about the slow idle. Should I bring the bike back and ask them to change the idle speed? I have put on Rinehart true duals, but have not done a stage 1 yet. Should I do the stage 1 and have it dynoed? Thanks, Halfbreed
You can adjust both the cold and warm idles on the MM set ups. I just did both on my 2000 and it is pretty simple to do. Do a google search and you'll find a bunch of articles explaining how to do it. In a nutshell, the cold idle screw is on the butterly shaft on the right side of the throttle body. Warm the engine, disconnect the ISCA, adjust the cold idle. Connect ISCA.
The warm adjustment is through a small hole, bottom right on throttle body. Adjust the warm idle.
Disconnect the 5 and 15 amp fuses and let it sit for 20 or 30 minutes.
Try making the adjustments yourself before giving your money to the dealer.
it's a twin cam motor and it needs a higher idle than the older evos, otherwise you'd not have sufficient oil pressure, and might have problems with that. i'm glad that 2000five oh had the solution though. seems like he's been there before. good luck.
I have the same issue with my 00EGC, been trying to figure it out since the end of last year, set idles numerous times, changed all the sensors on the throttle body, new packings, intake gaskets, EVERYTHING, but the bike still hates idling when cold, once warm mine will idle right at 1000. Good luck and let us know what you did to fix it.
