I've been using Amsoil in all three holes until I put Redline Heavy in the transmission the last time. That is some evil looking crap and I saw no difference is shifting or tranny noise so I'm not using it the next time.

I had compression releases installed last month and the mechanic called me to show me how much carbon was on the heads and pistons. We were both surprised at how much there was after only 16,000 miles. He asked me what kind of oil I used and I told him Amsoil. He indicated that he sees that often with Amsoil. I think I'm switching to Mobil 1.

Probably cant go wrong any way you go. All very good oils.
Mob1 V-Twin oil in the engine (where oil belongs), Mob1 syn. ATF in the primary, Mob1 syn. gear oil in the trans - easy to find, somewhat affordable...

Jim,

Can you expand on the compression release install? I ride old dirt bikes so I know what your talkin' 'bout, just curious about the application.

the problem i have with amzoil is that there are like eleven dealers on the planet. thanks anyway, i want to use an oil that i can find anywhere. royal purple 20-50 is what i'm running in the crankcase and primary, and the royal purple 75-140 in the trans. a perfect combo, although royal purple almost doubled in price in my area lately, so i got five quarts of syn 3 for my next change. the royal purple i can get at o'reileys, pep boys, auto zone, all of the major chains. but with syn 3 at 9 bux a quart vs 17 a quart for royal purple. and a huge difference it made. runs noticeably cooler, and the trans almost shifts as well as a jap bike. very quiet and smooth, a click rather than a clunk

I'd do Amsoil or Mobil 1 in all 3 holes.

I quit using synthetic in the primary, it made the clutch harder to use in the friction zone. It seem to bite to hard. A 10w40 oil works pretty good, but I've wondered how a gear oil would work.

I've heard that even Harley is saying not to use Syn-3 in the primary. I used to run Syn-3 in all three holes, but started to get clutch slippage and wear. I heard that Syn-3 is too slippery for the clutch and the primary doesn't require such sophisticated oil. I was going to switch to the HD Formula+ and got talked into the RedLine regime by the HD dealer.

Clutch action is MUCH better with RedLine MTL (now RedLine Primary oil) in the primary. Not much difference with the Shockproof in the trans and the engine ran fine with Syn-3 and RedLine. Considering going to Mobil-1 for reputation and cost.
