I ride an 06 night train. Got it new and pumped the hell out of the motor. 105 hp on the dino at one place and 102.3 hp on a diferent dino (Just to make sure they werent lieing to me)
On particularly hot days, I could hear my valves slapping shut, rods pushing and all the little gremlins at work inside the motor. I was looking to put an oil cooler on the bike just for the extra capacity and cooler temps.
I did some checking around. As you can see by my post count, Im not a big internet guy. So I went to several mechanics that I know and trust. They suggested I try AMSoil first. I figured an oil change was a lot cheaper than an oil cooler so I did.
That **** is like miracle fluid. My bike runs 8 to 12 degrees cooler depending on the weather. I dont hear any of the engine noise and I get about 3 more miles per gallon of gas. I dont know what the diferance is on the dino. I wouldnt dare assume its a whole lot diferent though.
To keep it in perspective though, I am comparing the Golden Spectro that Harley pushes to the AMSoil.
Put Amsoil oin all 3 holes Syn3 is bottom of the line crap.
no, really, it isn't. i personally don't use it, last oil change went with mobil1 15050 that i can get locally. but syn3 is fine. in truly independent testing, there was no clear winner as to what the 'best' oil was. some were better in one category, and worse in another.
i think the 'best' oil is whatever you can get for a decent price and changed according to the moco specs. if that is royal purple in your area, great, if its amsoil, thats okay too. if you happen to live close to an hd dealer and want to pay for syn3, thats fine too.
just don't believe the hype that you can extend you oil change interval with a synthetic. while the viscosity may still be fine, one of the jobs of the oil is to suspend contaminants. and you are still gonna get those. so unless you like to pay for oil analysis, change your oil according to spec.
I guess I am old school. Dino oil for me. Forumla+ in primary and tranny and 60 weight in Crankcase (I live in FL..hot in summer). I got tired of hearing the top end of my motor clatter. Anyways...I change all three every 2500. Oil is cheap...Why people think it is a good idea to wait untill 5000 just because it is synthetic is beyond me. So if you change every 2500...not sure how much difference it makes as long as you use a quality oil. Just my 2 cents..
Owners manual says change at 5000 miles so 5000 it is ... i may extend it to 7 if i forget but usually 5k. 2500 mile would be a waste since the manual says 5000...Synthetic oil doesn't break down as quick so i feel 5000-7000 is very reasonable. Interval.
Plenty of science if you search the forum and read some of the lengthier posts on oil choices...but Amsoil 20-50 engine/primary, 75-110 in the trans. No complaints. Will probably try Redline next change. Wouldn't put a Citgo product in my lawnmower.
