I have a hard time keeping my windshield from rattling/vibrating at low speeds and take offs. It is caused by engine vibration picked up from the frame. I have the chrome trim strip between the fairing and the windshield but don't see how that would make any difference. I tighten the center screw (that seems to be the problem) about once a week. I wonder if it is a problem for the Road Glide because the fairing is frame mounted and gets more vibration from the engine than the batwing models. Or, maybe it's just my bike. I ride with several batwing riders but no other Roadies so don't know if this is just my bike or a common problem.
Do you have the tall HD windshield? I had one on my '04 FLTRI and it did the same......only because it is flimsy. I went to a Clearview GT Medium size unit years ago and have yet to replace it. Thicker material, scratch resistant, no coating that peels, sleeker and slightly recurved.
It isn't the bike, it's the el crappo HD tall windshield. Tape a quarter to it and kick it to the curb. The quarter is there so you can say you threw something worthwhile away.
Try HD gasket #57660-09 and the Cee baileys new retro bolt kit. I do not believe it will work with your chrome piece but it is buy far the best fit I have ever achieved with any shield and that out weighs any chrome, besides it looks really nice and clean with the gasket. The gasket is the one on the 09 SE road glides.
My HD tall windshield acted like a flag in the wind.
I stayed with the standard one for trips and switch out
for the SE one for runs with the boys.
The standard one still vibrates at the stop lites....may have
to try one of those heavier ones.
My windshield screws kept virbrating loose, causing the windshield to virbrate and make cracking noises. I put a little silcone (very little) on the threads of each bolt and torqued them to 25in lbs. No problems with them coming loose since. did that about a year and a half ago when the bike was 3 or 4 months old.
I have the Clearview +2" and it works a LOT better that stock. A little vibration at idle but that is it. They are well worth the money. You may want to consider some lowers too. Take a look at Hogg Chopps.
