When I totally disassembled my bags for my paint project recently, I reassembled them but somehow managed to move the lock mechanism to the locked position and the latch would not sit flush.

Otherwise, if all you did was remove two screws to remove the fabric from the original lid and remove the five screws from the piano hinge from the original lid, then reinstall them in your new lid, I'm with you on not understanding why the new lid won't latch properly.

In any event, use blue Locktite on the five piano hinge screws. They appear to have locktite on them already (blue or red), but may come loose when reinstalled without adding blue Loctite when you reinstall them.
all I did was remove the 2 screws from cloth and the 5 screws from piano hinge.....it is not the lock that I can not lock.it is opened..it doesn't feel like the lock is keeping it from sitting flush...it seems to be the lid...I can not get the latch to sit flush...it feels like the lid is not seated properly and the latch can not go flush without me forcing the bag down.....I thought is may be the new padding on the new lid....maybe I have to cut it down a bit to make the lid sit properly??? I am at a loss of what to do next...I get too frustrated...maybe after work before I go to my dealer..I will look again at the other side....I did yesterday but I was so freakin frustrated....LOL

Apologize if this is redundant ....

Have you matched/compared the new lid to the old? Are the hinges installed correctly? I've never removed one of my lids, but is there a 'front' and 'rear' hinge, if so are they switched?

You're probably correct, it's something easy and you're overlooking it.

Update...

Yesterday, I bought the saddlebag and lid to the dealer...After two of the service managers checked the latch...they could not find anything wrong.....I left the bag there and he said they will look at it more today.....
One of them said the latch may be bent somewhere...they are going to take the latch of the lid and see if that happened....

I will keep you guys updated...

the saga continues

well it wouldn't have made a difference I do not think...I didn't buy the lid from my harley dealer...I bought it from Chicago Harley....I am out on Long Island. The lid on saw on ebay was brand new also....same OEM lid being sold by another harley dealer......just hope they can find the problem...or else I may have to "spring" for a new latch....or maybe the lid is off a bit...and I just reinstall the other lid and leave it with the few scratches that is has....oh well...let's see what the dealer says

Did you find out what the problem was. I'm interested in your saga, earlier in the week I took the bags off to wash my rear wheel and put the bags on the grass next to the driveway. I was washing the wheel and heard something behind me, the bag had fallen over on the grass but the lid flopped open and landed on the driveway and the wifes dog was hauling **** the other way. Now I have to buy a new lid AND a new dog....................... Just kidding about the dog, she was lucky I didn't catch her.

my saga continues...I dropped the bag and lid off at the dealer Wednesday...I called him about an hr ago and they still didn't look at it yet. I also gave him the old lid to see if it is the same size and shape of the other one to make sure the new one is indeed the same size...

the only other thing I can think of is that the foam weather gasket going around the new lid is getting in the way of closing the lid....
by the way this is the part # for the lid...the letters are for the color...

Default the latest...

Well...found out that the latch was bent.....the dealer was able to "straighten" out the latch as best as he can I am able to at least lock the latch....It is very tight....I went ahead and ordered a latch for the bag. It will be here in about 5 days. The dealer gave me orders.....

when the latch comes...bring in the saddlebag and let US install it....

He didn't have to twist my arm.....I said for sure!!!

I also have to say that the service manager worked on the bag for about 1/2-1 hour and he didn't want to take any money from me.....WOW HOW ABOUT THAT! he didn't take any money at all and I think he will install the latch for no charge also...I know it is not a big deal to install the latch....but when does harley never charge....

I think I will buy a few pizza pies for the shop when I go get the latch installed.....

well...If the weather gets nice here in NY...I will mount the bag and ride.....if not..I won't even put it on the bike....

thanks for everyone here that tried to help and a BIG thanks to Nick the service manager at Bellmore Harley!!

Glad you got it right; and, yes, there are some really good folks at HD stores.

Personally, I've found that the techs enjoy a cold beer on a Friday afternoon, and my saddlebags make a great cooler.
