i bought a used '06 Ultra Classic and the right side saddlebag lid was scratched. Since the bike is MINT, I decided to order a new lid. I tried to install the new lid and for the life of me I can not get the lock bracket to close......it closed fine with the other lid so I know the lock bracket is not broken. What can I do....what should I try next/ You think the "rubber" seal around the lid is so new...it is keeping the lid a bit tighter so the lock can not close? I can not get the @@!# lock to close for the life of me...can anyone suggest a "fix" or what I should try.
Thanks forr helping out a new member and I will start to contribute. Great site here!!
Probably not whats wrong but on mine the cloth that the lid hangs on keeps folding up under the lock area. Just before I latch it I have to stick my fingers under there and push the material back out of the way or the latch will pop back open. Just a thought.
Check the latch spring. I just replaced both of mine cuz the left side one was causing problems closing the lid. The original springs rust out in no time. Each spring should have TWO "****" on it that make contact with opposite sides of the latch. Got a couple of extras to change out again when needed.
You may have both sides of the sring '****' on the same side ,this will cause the latch not to work..Look at spring on other bag to see if yours is right. Hope its somthing easy like this.

you say on the same side...they are supposed to be on different sides??
How would they get on the same side? They can move by themselves when I took off the latch? I am at wits end here...I am at work. I will try when I get home...It is so stright foward that I am pulling out my hair....and I shave my head LOL
I do not think it is the cloth.....I think I pushed it out of the way...but I will look for that again....
why are all the installs that are supposed to be easy FREAKIN HARD
I don't have an answer to your situation, but if you don't mind, where did you get your lid, how much did you pay and was it already color matched. Also did you consider having the original one repaired at a body shop.
I paid $200 with shipping......but after I ordered it (already painted Cobalt Blue and Silver) I saw the same one NEW and PAINTED on eBay for $150...
oh well...
I didn't try the local body shop.....I figured they would have to buy the paint and then the labor I figured it will be the same......who knows....
I may sell the other lid. I think I can get around $45 for it...so the new will be a bit lower then $200...
edit..I ordered it from Chicago Harley

thanks anyway!! I didn't take the latch apart...only off the old lid and just replaced it on the new one....It was straight foward.....but still have problems.....think I will take the bag to my local dealer.....I am probably missing something so minor and stupid.....
Not sure what you mean by saying: "I can not get the lock bracket to close." If you mean the latch won't engage and sit flush to the side of the bag, check the saddlebag lock; if it's in the locked position the latch won't close and sit flush. When I totally disassembled my bags for my paint project recently, I reassembled them but somehow managed to move the lock mechanism to the locked position and the latch would not sit flush.
Otherwise, if all you did was remove two screws to remove the fabric from the original lid and remove the five screws from the piano hinge from the original lid, then reinstall them in your new lid, I'm with you on not understanding why the new lid won't latch properly.
In any event, use blue Locktite on the five piano hinge screws. They appear to have locktite on them already (blue or red), but may come loose when reinstalled without adding blue Loctite when you reinstall them.
