Default Opinions on fork legs

Alright this winter new wheels get put on the 09 sg. I'm going with a single side brake on the front end. I have seen bikes with the brake mounting tab machined off the right side which looks cool but do you guys think leaving the tab alone would look okay too? Thanks

Leave the tab alone, that way you can go back to a twin disc setup later if you want. It's a heavy bike and won't brake nearly as well with just one.

I think, with the right tools and skill, the mounts can be machined off and look nice. Its your bike and your choice, but you do know you are going to lose a LOT of stopping power, right? Most sources say front bakes provide 70% or so of stopping power.

Ya i know about losing braking i am planning on up grading to a 6 piston caliper on the left side. Proponents say that will more than compensate for having only 1 brake but i don't know.

Lowers are dime a dozen.
Do the job right...remove the tabs!
If you're putting a $1500 dollar wheel on and can't afford to buy another set of lowers in the future should you decide to go back to dual brakes...then spend $1400 on the wheel and the other $100 on lowers, later.

As for losing braking power, you're not going to lose enough to notice a huge difference.
Go with a quality 6 piston brake and 13" rotor.
I'm running a 6 piston PM and that's the strongest damn brake I've ever locked down.

How's this for brake tab removal?

Buy a lower from a single disc bike and slap it on there. That way it looks proper as said above. I would not want to have less braking power, but we all know vanity plays a role.

I second Badpiggy...There are a few guys that sell lower legs on Ebay that work in a chrome shop. If you send them a email they will be able to fix you up. It worked for me, hope this helps...

I did it.

Use a sawzall to remove majority of the tab..then a die grinder to blend it in. Lightly blend it, though...the chrome shop will polish it and you'll never know it was there. You can also use the die grinder with sanding pads to remove the markings on the inside of the legs..."Showa" "part number"

Then shoot forum member "Puzzled" a PM for a "Bad As Hell" axle cap and flush mount axle. Notice mine...it just flows right in with the leg.

Don't let other threads steer you into buying a Softail lower because it doesn't have the tabs. The Softail lowers are different, not much...but enough. It tapers whereas the FL lowers don't.
