I've read a lot of posts on tires, but I've about decided to go back to the Dunlop D402 MU85HB-16 on the rear. Not sure that the Elite III's have been road tested enough and I know the D402 is a good tire.
Hadn't planned on changing the rear for another 2k miles, but apparently a nail has decided it for me. :-(
Hope everyone is having a great weekend. It's HOT here in MS.
I'm not sure how a tire could have been road tested more than the E3, considering its popularity with the Gold Wing crowd over the last few years. Do a search on some GW forums like I did, then read the testimonials and you will likely be impressed. The Wing nuts are also touring nuts and ride in all kinds of weather. The E3 is very popular with these guys, and for me that was enough to try it, especially with its reputation for longer tread life. In the 15k and 13 months since I mounted this rear E3 I'm also on the bandwagon. Not only does it handle very well but is wearing much better than any D402 I've ever owned by a long shot.
Can someone explain why the 402's are so bad? I got 8k out of the rear(to many 2nd gears) and 19k out of the front. It only got squirreley one time, in the rain, when it was on the painted lane lines, changing lanes and gears at the same time. Is it a traction issue or a harsh ride or what
After reading the rave reviews on this forum about the E3s, I was seriously considering them, especially since they are quite a bit cheaper than the D402. However, it finally dawned on me that the only complaint that I have about the D402 is that I only get about 9k miles on the rear one. In my experience it handles great in heavy rain ( which reportedly the Metzeler 880 does not) and I have had good performance with the D402s and no personal experience with the E3s. I have decided to stick with what I know and I am one of the ones that trust Harley-Davidson to choose correctly. I also have not felt threatened by the D402 performance over bridge grating or tar snakes.
I have about 2700 miles on the E3's on my Ultra and I'm only sorry it took going through 3 rear and one front 402's in 26K miles to see the light. I don't even have to clean the whitewalls any more :-) Seriously, the E3's far outperform the 402's and reportedly give considerably more mileage between replacements.
Since I gotta buy, I don't wanna waste money, but I do want the bet tire for the buck.
All the time I thought the D402 was a good tire..... sounds like I have a treat in store for me, with another choice. :-)
The D402 is a good tire. But there are better ones out there. I use E3's and I think they are great tires. Much better ride and many more miles. They use to be about the same price.

I switched over to Metzler 880's years ago and they are fantastic in the rain, I've never heard any complaints in that regard...my only complaint was the lower mileage I was getting. I'd be lucky to get 8,000 on my Road King but surprisingly I have just over 10,000 on the rear on my Ultra and could probably get another 2,000 but I'm heading to Deals Gap in two weeks and figured new skin was a good idea. I did just get an E3 for the rear, will be putting it on next week. By the way, E3 was $116.99 shipped from Dennis Kirk
O.k. Need to replace the back tire before the weekend. Dealer want $180 for the D402. Says that's all he has. Also says I shouldn't put a different tire on the back....meaning replace the stock D402 with and Elite 3 or otherwise without also replace the front with the same.
Front's still got some good miles on it, and I think the dealer is full of it; just out for the $$$$.
Outside of the above, anyone in or been in the Denver area know of somewhere I can get a good tire and have it stuck on before the weekend?
