I've read a lot of posts on tires, but I've about decided to go back to the Dunlop D402 MU85HB-16 on the rear. Not sure that the Elite III's have been road tested enough and I know the D402 is a good tire.
Hadn't planned on changing the rear for another 2k miles, but apparently a nail has decided it for me. :-(
Hope everyone is having a great weekend. It's HOT here in MS.
don't know about the elite III but I for one really like the d402s. I had the metzler marathon 880s on my old honda vtx and they were really good tires also. The elite's will have to be one heluva tire to get me off the stock 402s.
the d402 is a horrible tire. just about anything will be better than them. i couldnt believe how bad the 402's follow any little groove in the road. I run metzlers now and couldnt be happier. have heard many good things about the E3's though. the tread on the e3 is similar to the avon venoms which also have good reviews.
Since I gotta buy, I don't wanna waste money, but I do want the bet tire for the buck.
All the time I thought the D402 was a good tire..... sounds like I have a treat in store for me, with another choice. :-)
i dont mean to knock it that hard as it is certainly capable tire and i guarantee more HD touring bikes have them than any other tire, but for a few more bucks there are much better choices in my opinion. good luck with your tire purchase.

+1
Since I bought a Metzler 880 I can't imagine anyone ever buying that POS Dunlop 402.
Buy ANYTHING but a 402.

Couldn't wait to get the 402s off my bike. Thought I would try the Michelin Commanders when Moco offered them. Weren't much better than the 402's. The e3's have been around for a long time - well tested by both Harley riders and even more by Goldwing riders. They are head and shoulders above the 402's and Commanders.
You can spend a day or two reading about all the tires and you'll end up with this..
Metzlers are good tires..depending on where they are made. Many folks like them, but there seems to be a history of separation.
402's suck..ALWAYS. Comparatively speaking, they might be worthwhile if walking were the only other option.
E3's are universally outperforming or at least meeting the expectations and comparisons to other top brands, and always spanking the crap out of the 402
