I've put about 4000 miles on the Pirelli Night Dragons, and I like them very well. They are very "grippy" and don't follow rain grooves. Very good on wet pavement.
I run the E3 s now, put on a front and back right at 5000 miles ago, handle very well, IMHO better than the 402's, they do seem stiffer, feels like you have a few more lbs of air in them than the gauge shows, I'm allways amazed though at the huge differences I see in milage people get, guess riding style is the main cause. Most I ever got out of a 402 rear was 8000, had a couple wear out in a little under 7000, 12000 or so out of a front, at 5000 I still have a lot of tread left on the E3's, look like they'll go over 10,000, if they do I'm a very happy camper.
Well, I just replaced the rear tire with the Elite lll [MU90B-16] and have not replaced the front D402 at this time. Going to the Dragon next week and wanted a little rear grip. Front tire is still good. Rear tire was ok, and could have gotten a couple thousand more miles out of it, on everyday riding.
Mileage on the bike is at 15k. First replacement of tire.
So, guess I ride easy? 15k out of the stock D402's on the rear and the front looks good, probably another 3-5k out of it.
Got 15000 mi out of last 402 on the rear. 28000 on the front and still lots left. Picked up a piece of metal in the rear so had it changed in New Brunswick while on a trip in August. $312 Cdn for a 402 installed but they got me right in, no waiting. If you're gonna play, ya gotta pay I guess. No complaints on mileage but next time I want to try the E3's.
Put my E3 on my Ultra before a trip to The Dragon.... couldn't be happier. Great grip, if the wear is as good as you guys say..... it will be an awesome tire.
Question... what tire pressure are you running in your E3's? I ran 40 lbs. in my 402's, so I'm continuing with the E3, the same pressure.
I did get 15k miles out of my rear 402. I'm still running the 402 on the front, probably will get close to 20k out of it.
I talked to a guy at Avon, and he said while it's a great tire, it won't last over 8,000. I do a lot of highway riding, and he said if I were you I would get the Metzler 880's. there's a guy giving an honest opinion without trying to sell me something.
I only get 6K out of my rear 402s. Been that way on the last 2 Ultras. ........I would KILL to get 10K-12K on a rear tire again! I will be trying the E3 soon.
