Default Starter Problem 07 FLHTCU

I'm having intermittent starting problems with my ultra. Sometimes I push the button and nothing! I does not click or anything. It's definetly not the battery. So far I have not been stranded but it seems to happening more often. I fool around with it, turning the ignition on and off, kill switch on and off, in and out of nuetral, and today I drifted it forward and let the clutch out and then the starter kicked in. I'm going to take the starter out and take it to my local starter repair shop and let him look at it.

Any ideas or advise will be appreciated!

Clean your battery cables and tighten them check and tighten the earth to the frame also the power to the starter connection check the starter relay you can swap with the brake light relay. Get your self a multimeter and work your way back from the starter motor checking for voltage before you replace your starter.

I would also suggest that you check the two bolts that mount the starter. I had a similar problem with a 2007 FLHTCU.

When I first saw this SB last year I re-torqued the starter bolts but didn't replace the exhaust bracket. No problems so far. Do you know if this is a recall, as I'm out of warranty. I might change the bracket, which is only $14, but I'm having no trouble and hate to fix it if it ain't broke. Do you know how pervasive this problem is? I haven't heard of anyone whose had this problem in my area.

I did find the problem! The rear bolt on the starter was gone and the front bolt was loose. Two years ago I installed a 2 into 1 exhaust so I was not useing the exhaust bracket. I kept hearing a jingling type rattle when riding. I thought it just was my Gaurdian bell. Turns out that the rattle was coming from the unused exhaust bracket that is fastened to the front starter bolt.

I'm thinking of changing the two starter bolts. Its not easy to get 25 to 27 ft lbs of torque on a 1/4 inch allen head bolt.

Thanks for the help!
