There has been some great threads on the different windshields for long rides, but I'm interested in anyone's preferred windshield while wearing an open face 3/4 helmet.
I have a 9.5 inch Clearview recurve and it's great with the half helmet. When I wear my Shoei 3/4 I get the paint shaker effect and lots of wind slapping noise on the side of the helmet. I tried a 12 inch shield and it helped, but I don't want to look through the windshield.
My SG is setup like an Ultra with vented lowers, fork baffle, and wind deflectors on the bottom of the batwing.
Has anyone found a near perfect windshield that meets this description? I have a feeling that I'm looking for a product that doesn't exist.
I have the Cee Bailey's SSC 12" windshield which is equal to a stock 9". I look over it agood 1.5-2". I also wear a Bell Mag 8 helmet which has a longer than normal visor. Not a single wind issue.
I just put a 6", dark tint, on my SG from www.fastaire.com . I had their 8" before, but after over 20,000 miles it was a little beat up. I wear a 1/2 helmet and it is not offensive at all. These shields are inexpensive, high quality and shipped fast. Why do you change helmets for a longer ride? Heavy helmets in the wind are going to bother you.
I had the 9.5" Clearview and didn't like it for long rides with a fair amount of time on the highway. If going into a headwind it just wasn't tall enough. Lifted my half helmet.
Also, because it is narrower than a stock shield more air comes in from the sides. If most of my riding was in the twisty hills it would be fine. Probably a 10.5 (if they make them) would be better.
For me, on long trips the stock 12" is the best even tho the top is right at my eyes. Probably could cut it an inch.
I am still a believer in Clark's Custom FLHT windshields (I prefer the look of the "Flat Top" models. There's no recurve but they are wider than stock and I believe it pushes air just the right way to kill the turbulence (speaking only from personal experience). I'm 6'1", 30" inseam and have a 9" flat top which I see over very easily, I probably could have gotten the 10" and it would have been fine too. I have not found another that competes with these so far.
