I use castrol gtx 20-50 on both bikes , 97 electra glide classic with 60000 miles, just castrol changed every 1000 miles, never had a problem and 04 se deuce 6000 miles same oil, same interval never had a problem. So Castrol gtx 20-50 all the way!!
Just a heads up for the gentlemen that are using Castrol Syntec. Castrol Syntec is not a "synthetic" motor oil in the strictest sense. It is a highly refined crude oil that has met the minimum standards (I believe, set by the US goverment) to be considered a synthetic oil. The only 'true' synthetic that Castrol makes is their Castrol Syntec European Blend that specificlly states "MADE IN GERMANY" on the back of the bottle. If it doesn't say MADE IN GERMANY on it, it ISN"T synthetic. And, as far as I know, IT only comes in 0w30. All of their other motor oil labeled synthetic, well....it just isn't!! This post is correct. But it's true with most synthetics INCLUDING mobil 1.
If you can get castrol cheap use it. And change it often. Your bike isn't going to blow up if you don't use synthetic
I used Castrol GTX 20w50 in my 95 Ultra for 168k trouble free miles without ever putting a wrench on the engine except for maintenance. I changed the oil and filter at 2500 miles. Bike ran well and still had good compression when I traded it at 168k miles. I think if you use a good quality name brand oil and change it at a reasonable interval, you will have no problems. The only thing I noticed was that if the temp got into the 90's my oil pressure at idle would be pretty low but that's typical for an EVO
Hey guys, I need some quick advise. I've searched high and low on this withing the threads. I have easy access to Castrol 20/50 oil and was wondering if any of you use this (??). In this tight economy, I would like to use a quality oil without robbing my bank, or paying the "stealer".
I used it for break-in oil (2000 miles, two changes). It's now >$4/qt. and you can get Mobil 1 15w50 for about $5.40/qt. in the 5-qt. jug, both at Walmart, so I doubt if that difference would break anyone's budget.
when i was in mechanic school...they said use whatever grade/weight (not brand) the manufacturer recommends and change it when they recommend to....when did all that go out of the window???.....my manual says change at 5000 miles or 6 months except when riding in cold weather where they shorten the recommendation...for both syn and dino....I believe that changing your oil more often is a waste of money and time except under extreme conditions (and a air cooled motor is not an extreme condition)....and maybe the break in period....and if its good enough for the engineers who designed the motor it good enough for me...its seem to me that if some of you good folks had your way you wouldn't even need a oil plug, just pour it in the top and let it run out of the bottom as you are driving down the road...

True! A lot of folks just don't pay attention. I've had a BMW (car) for 15 years. It tells me when it wants an oil change. So does my wife's SUV, & most modern cars. If you have one of those pay attention to the mileage between changes......7000 or more. The 2500 or 3000 mile oil changes were ideal for the service guys, but terrible for the environment & your wallet. I run 5000/6000 between oil changes, but if I'm on a trip I don't worry about it. I'll double the mileage if I need to, just make sure the level is correct.
