Why not use a 100% synthetic, Mobile 1 15w50. $23.00 for 5 gallon jug at Walmart. Your bike will luv you for it.
Because it now falls into the same category as castrol. Group 3 basestock. Which is a hydrocracked crude oil.
If you want a real synthetic you have to spend some money. If it costs less than 10 bucks a quart it is not a group 4 or 5 basestock.
And all you mobil fans should check out the cam wear thread at bob is the oil guy. Pretty telling stuff.
Never will I spend a dime on any mobil product again. They prove that marketing will beat out information every day.
Used the castrol Dino oil for break in on my Roadking. When I brought the bike home new, ran it for 50 miles, did the motorman break in process. Changed to the castrol dino 20-50 vtwin erl and then after the the first 1000 went with mobil 1 synth 20-50 vtwin erl.
Always ran castrol in my wee small 1989 Honda civic. I ran dino in it and changed it at 3,000 miles sold it with 212000 on it, still running very well.
I use the scavenger oil change method on my Roadking, which gets all the dirty oil out of the sump when chafing the oil. I feel that if you're going to change oil, why leave dirty oil in there to mix with the clean oil.
I have never run anything but Castrol 20/50 oil in my 84 Evo...can't seem to wear the motor out...I refuse to be brainwashed into thinking more expensive oil is better. 28 years old and still doesn't smoke or use oil...what do you want? It is very hard to wear out a motor that has clean oil in it.
Jeez, the last thing I want to do is bump a oil thread. That been said, I was told by a Indy today to never use synthetic oil in a H-D engine. He said it makes the engine temp run hotter, and every bike he's ever drained the oil came out "smelling like fish". I just had my 1K service done with H-D 360 20w50. I was gonna do the next one myself @ 3k with Mobile1 15w50. I've always had metric bikes before and never used anything but Castrol GTX 20w50 in them with no issues. This is my first Harley so I'm new to them. I guess what I'm asking is, was I told wrong about syn. oil, and should just stick with what I know?
The first thing I would ask him is what has he been smoking... next thing you will hear is that synthetic oil will make the bearings "skate".
