some oils are better than others, google can help you determine that...otherwise if you keep oil in the bike, and it is not black in color, and so low you can not see it on the stick, it will probably last longer than you....
previous bike was 07 electraglide with infamous delfi fuel injection-dam thing would go crazy and run lean at times - I put a oil temp gage on bike and when fuel would lean out oil temp would soar- I was using mobil 1 but when I swiched to castrol the temps were lower by 10 to 15 degrees- also castrol has an api rating of SN - so in my 2012 ultra its castrol for me

The SN spec is a reduction in zddp and increased friction modifiers to compensate.
That spec was introduced because the EPA believes increased zddp levels kill catalytic convertors.
If you can find oil with the SM spec those levels of zddp are much higher.
Just thought I would inform
+ 1 Tucci. Walmart's around here have quit carrying Mobil 1 15/50. The only place I can find it now is Advance auto for 7.89 a quart. Still cheaper than Amsoil and Redline.
I ran Castrol 20/50 in all my bikes until Synthetic Oil was created. It's good oil, but just like any Dino oil, it will breakdown sooner under heat.
If I used it, I would change it every 3K. JMO

Thank for the heads up- I thought that the farther down the alphabet the better the oil, but after reading your post I see that SN oils have lower levels of zddp, an additive that reduces friction,

Hey guys, I need some quick advise. I've searched high and low on this withing the threads. I have easy access to Castrol 20/50 oil and was wondering if any of you use this (??). In this tight economy, I would like to use a quality oil without robbing my bank, or paying the "stealer".
I use it in the primary but even though I'm a cheapskate I wouldn't use any fossil oil in the engine. To me that's bad economics, and since you can extend your change intervals with synthetic I honestly feel like the net cost is very similar.
Jeez, the last thing I want to do is bump a oil thread. That been said, I was told by a Indy today to never use synthetic oil in a H-D engine. He said it makes the engine temp run hotter, and every bike he's ever drained the oil came out "smelling like fish". I just had my 1K service done with H-D 360 20w50. I was gonna do the next one myself @ 3k with Mobile1 15w50. I've always had metric bikes before and never used anything but Castrol GTX 20w50 in them with no issues. This is my first Harley so I'm new to them. I guess what I'm asking is, was I told wrong about syn. oil, and should just stick with what I know?
