Default Old fart considering 1st HD

I've been riding for >40 yrs and never owned a HD. I bought a 79 Gold Wing new and rode it up to a few years ago. Now I ride a 99 BMW 1100RT that I rebuilt from salvage. A few years ago I bunged up my kneed bad on a dirt bike (hey watch this!) and I'm finding that the Beemer just doesn't allow me to crawl all over it like the old GW did in an effort to get the leg in different positions.

Long story longer... I got a guy that wants to trade his 95 Electra Glide for my BMW. It's got about 35k on it with a S&S carb. I've done a little research on here about the EVO engine and this cam bearing issue. I'm a pretty good wrench and believe I could handle things. Hey, two air cooled cylinders and a carb. Throw me in that briar patch after oil cooled, fuel injected boxers and wet, flat, 4 carb 4's!

I guess I'm trying to get a warm feeling about this bike re my needs and abilities independent of the whole "Harley mystique" which doesn't interest me in the least.

Informed opinions invited.

Tks,

Bob

I had three Evo. baggers (86,91,and 97) and NO cam problems. Total of over 300K on the bikes. As a matter of fact, I wish that I had all three of them back today!

Mulepick?, I'm no genius but in my opinion there is no better knee therapy than wrenchin' and ridin' harley regardless of age (rider or bike).
I tried to kick over a road barrier while ridin' (dirt bike) about 40 years ago....still get pieces of gravel coming out of my knee every so often.
Go for it.

Can't comment on the engine, but can tell you that with a backrest and some forward highway pegs, you can move all over and get into different positions. You probably would want to buy an aftermarket seat that is NEW and more supportive than what is on the bike, plus they can be had with back rests. Make sure the back rest is adjustable.

evo didn't have cam bearing problems, they take a beating and keep on ticking, but your gonna feel guilty for screwing the guy over by taking his harley and giving him a bmw.

If the EVO has been maintained I wouldn't worry a bit about it. The later year EVOs were some of the best engines the MoCo has ever built.

Dude one thing I can say is if you "like" wrenching there is no better bike than a harley. Endless aftermarket and mods. DO IT DO IT DO IT!!!!!

The guy I ride with has an Evo powered bike with 78,000 miles on it and it's going strong. No issues with anything in the engine.
