Today I was out for a ride on the way back home. I was on the highway just a few miles from home. They are working on the highway and they have those concrete barriers and some sand barrels at some locations. These barrels are about 3 feet in diameter and filled with sand. The idea being that if you crash into one you will slow down better than hitting a concrete barrier head on.
Well a truck just a head of be (I was back about 6 car lengths) hit one of the barrels... He corrected and kept going and this barrel and sand was throw into the middle of my lane. I immediately hit the brakes. I had little time to stop and now there was sand every place which does not help with stopping.
I was able to slow down safely due to the ABS... I felt them kicking in several times as I hit patches of sand.
As I cleared the obsticle I could see in my mirrors cars in all lanes of the road trying avoid this mess.
I pulled off at the next exit and called the CHP and gave them the info. I sure hope no one behind me got hurt.
Oh and the guy with the boat did follow me off the highway, but did not stop to see if I was OK or to wait for the police. I sure hope they get him.
But the ABS saved the day... I would not have planned for a sudden loss of traction on a day in the 80's... But I was faced with that today.
Just bought a new SG a month ago with ABS, something I didn't want to spend the money on at the time. I figured after 25 years of riding without it why start now? The dealer ended up convincing me with some personal stories and then covered half the cost of the option.
Well...two weeks later a deer jumped out in front of me and I hit the brakes with all I had. The bike stopped straight while I was still in full control of the bike (anyone who's locked 'em up will know what I'm talking about). I'm a true believer in ABS now and wouldn't get another without it, one of the best bike options Harley EVER added to their bikes.
Glad to hear you're all right. This is a textbook example of why ABS is a good thing. It's almost impossible to know how the bike will react with the sand on the road. On a non ABS bike this could have turned out quite differently.
