Question SE255 cams with +4/-4 gear

I have been trying to fix my detonation issues for a few weeks now and cannot seem to cure it without retrading my timing so far that my performance is suffering. I was looking at getting a new cam such as the TW6 but now I am wondering if I can use a +4 gear to push out the intake closing 4 degrees and cure it all together and keep the 255 cams.

Thoughts?

Also is woods the only company that makes the +4 gear?

Just go and get it dyno tuned. The advanced gear will just move the power band around. I think its +4 equals 200 rpm lower when the torque curve comes in. This sounds like tuning issues.

Well according to several..... with the early closing of the intake on the 255 cams I am getting very early compression thus detonation. I have around 10:1 comp with I understand is the top limit of the 255 cams. With the +4 gear it should move the closing of the intake out 4 degrees which would make the compression start at a later point thus hopefully getting rid of my detonation? I know some have said I should be able to tune out the detonation which I have, but my feeling is by retarding the timing drasticaly it is not the correct fix.

As far as getting it dyno tuned....... I have absolutely no faith in any of the tuners in my area. I have been tuning witht he TTS tuner, I have my fuel set and my timing I have been retarding it to control the detonation, what else is there other than the fuel and timing?

I think Andrews makes a gear as well, but you would want to go -4, not +4. If you went +4 (advanced), that would close your intake even earlier and increase your ccp. AFAIK, timing and fuel quality given a certain engine compression are the biggest factors that will affect your detonation. Higher ccp and leaner afr's **typically** require you to retard the timing to prevent detonation. What may seem like pulling out a lot of timing might not really be the case. It might just be what the engine needs.

Matrix5 is right that you would want to go in the opposite direction, with a -4° gear to move the intake close to 29°, which would help but may not get rid of the problem.

I would adjust advance rather than hacking further on the motor. Where are you hearing detonation? Roll-on at low RPM's or WOT at higher revs?

I would use the highest-octane gas available in your area, although I'm sure you're already doing that. Other than that I think AFR and timing adjustment is your only alternative if you don't want to hack on the motor again.

Yea sorry I stated the direction incorrectly for the gear.

As far as the detonation.... I was hearing it all over the place, high RPM's under WOT, lower RPM's while lugging although not too bad and even under light throttle while cruising at 3000. I have tuned most of the pinging out but I have had to remove as much as 11 degrees timing in some areas.

I was trying to figure out a way to resolve this a little cheaper than new cams and pushrods but it may not be able to happen. Again I do understand that "some" have been able to run higher compression with these cams but several including Doc, and Mike at Latus have said that much over 9.5:1 will most likely cause problems with these cams.

Duke:

I would highly recommend a call to John (Herko) here:

http://www.flyingwperformance.com/

He has a ton of experience with the SE255s! Great guy to talk with. Also a TTS Tuner/Dealer.

BTW: There's more going on than just "fuel and timing".

I don't have as much experience as you and many others have on this forum about building motors, but I am very sure that the 255 cams are not your problem. It is the tune.

I had more problems than solutions with my 103" kit and 255 cams before I found a great tuner. I would rather make a long trip to a good tuner than hack at the motor for a solution that may or may not work because you still have a bad tune.

What better excuse for a road trip?

Dennis

edited to add............... We don't know what your location is. If you would share a general area it is very possible that someone could tell you about a great tuner that isn't all that far from you that you don't know of.
