Default '09 Oil Cooler Question

'09 Touring oil cooler 26155-09. Do your oil lines come one from each side or both from the same side? Was shipped one with lines from each side yet photo shows both from same side. Is there an old and new version of this cooler?

The oil lines are on both sides of the cooler. They'll straddle the voltage regulator when it's mounted.

You probably got the premium oil cooler. There is another version but I'm not familiar with it. It's older than what you have for the '09.

One on each side. My problem was how to orient the housing correctly on the motor. I hadn't started the job and was going to the dealer for oil and a filter, so I figured I would check out bikes and see if any had the oil cooler installed. They had an 09 screamin eagle RG, the housing was angled toward the front and up a bit. Then I saw an 09 Ultra and the housing was aimed up. Now I was really confused. I used a high temp RTV on the gasket, as I learned that many people have slight leaks from the gasket. I aimed my housing up, cooler works well.

Default Gasket

The gasket fit is king of strange. There is a piece of the gasket that runs across an open oil channel unsupported. That doesn't look correct.

Here's how it should look. Use a gasket adhesive on the one side to keep it from shifting when installing. Mine has not leaked after 4000 miles. Others have complained about minor leaks.

The engineer that designed that gasket should have his pocket protector revoked.

I agree 100%. I'm a 24 year retired CAT mechanic and I've never seen a more poorly designed gasket. It was even guesswork for me when I installed it. PLUS . . . those directions could have made more sense written in Chinese!

No leaks for me after 10K so I must have done it right.

Be sure to use gasket adhesive. I used a product made by CAT that is very similar to contact cement.

Default Gasket Pic

99FatBoy:

What year and/or part number is that oil cooler adaptor. My '09 (for an '09 road king) part 26155-09 is different. The two protruding flanges are in a different location which makes the gasket fit differently?

Thanks.

Default 26115-09 adapter & gasket question

28guage:

I have the same issue with the piece of gasket across the open channel and the location of the two protruding flanges being different than that being shown in the photos. I bought a new gasket kit #12056-05 but the gasket is the same as supplied with the 26115-09 oil cooler kit. Could the oil filter adapter assembly from the kit be wrong? Local dealer had no clue. I would like to order a new adapter assembly # 26198-09 but don't want to get stuck with it if it's the same. I want all the right parts before I do the install on my 2010 Ultra. How did you resolve this? HELP!!!

Thanks

Wish I could help. I installed mine 2 years ago. Hoses are on both sides. I remember the gasket being a rubics cube to figure out. Used thin film of grease on the gasket, no leaks. I think anything more is overkill.

If you happen to have a thunderheader on your '09 RK, the oil cooler will not fit. The O2 sensors are right in the way. Ask me how I know.
