Question Gas pump question

I was wondering if anyone here would know the answer to this question?

The gas pumps that have a sinlge nozzle for filling up with, most cagers use regular 87 octane fuel, we typically use premium (91 or 93 octane).

My question is when you select the premium fuel how much of the 87 octane remains in the "lines" prior to the premium getting to the tank? Is there some sort of internal tank in the pump itself or is it coming from the underground tank?

If so how much premium fuel is actually getting in our 4 or 5 gallons that we buy when we fillup?

It is neglible. Don't worry about it. The only way it would matter is if your tank was completely empty and you put it 0.2 gallons. So says a chemical engineer

my guess is possibly not very much at all as the pumps have 3 lines coming up from the tanks and if there was anything left in the rubber hose it would pour out all over the place if you hit the nozzel before the pump kicks on so i say very minimal amount

Prolly aint worrying about.. a few weeks ago we stopped at a station where the regular didnt work on any pump! they were selling premium for regular price and people were lined up with trunks full of gas cans!.. This station was right near a lake too so they had a run on cheap fuel and cases of beer.. Had to be there it was funny..

Last summer when gas prices were sky high, I pulled in and filled up with 5 gallons of premiun for about 15 cents. They programmed the pump and forgot the decimal. Tried to tell the lady inside and she was too busy to give a ****. Kinda pissed me off so for the next ten minutes I directed every car to this 3 cent pump.

The only way it would matter is in a higher compression motor like a Sportster.

Also, as I understand it, the presence of the octane boosting chemical is more significant than the ratio. I was told that if you mixed equal parts of regular and premium the octane effect would be greater than the midpoint between the two.
Bottom line anyway is that the small amount in the hose has no effect at all.

It's about one-half gallon in California. If you're filling up it won't be an issue.

I always miss out of those mistakes! I bet it felt good though to have someone be rude when you were trying to do the right thing and then guiding people to the "bargain"
