Default Need your input about a trade

I've got a 2002 Night Train (slightly customized - nothing major) with 27K miles that I'm thinking of trading for a 2000 Ultra straight-up. The biggest concern I have with the Ultra is that it's got 75K miles on it and to the best of my knowledge has not had a rebuild.

What do you guys think? Any concerns with a 75K mile Ultra? What should I watch out for? How many more miles do you think I could get out of it before I would be forced to rebuild the engine?

I'm hoping to do some more long distance riding which is why I want to upgrade. Please respond with your .02.

all depends on if it was a hard 75k miles or a well taken care of 75k miles with constant oil changes and maintenance performed.

I have had quite a few high mile harleys, and ride with guys that have over 130k miles on a bike with no rebuild...... on the other hand i have seen bikes with 30k miles on get rebuilt.....

if both bikes are of equal reliability/maintenance I would take the 75k mile ultra over the 30k mile night train

look for leaking oil around the seals/gaskets in the primary/transmission area where the motor mounts together.... look under the bike to see how clean it looks.... do you see tiny rust spots all over it?

on another note -- i run across good deals on bikes all the time, then i resell them for a small profit to my friends... i sold a 95 ultra with 75k miles on it for $7500... i picked up an 03 ultra with 25k miles on it for $10,000... A 2000 Ultra with 75k miles on it I would pay around $8,000 or so.... not sure what your night train is worth without looking into it more

hope that helps -- good luck

Your nada is below. Dealers might try to really rip you. I always thought Harley's retained their value but it' sure doesn't look like they think so, does it. Not sure what the ultra is worth (you can look that up) but if the ultra was kept up, I would take it over the NT.

PRICING

Low Retail Average Retail
Base Price
$7,130 $8,915
TOTAL PRICE $7,130 $8,915

Suggested List: $15,190 (what it should have cost you at the time of purchase).

Kelly Blue Book for trade-in value:

Trade-In Value (Good Condition) $8490 Trade-in Value is what consumers can expect to receive from a dealer for a trade-in unit assuming an accurate appraisal of condition. This value will likely be less than you would receive from a private party sale because the reselling dealer incurs the cost of safety inspections, reconditioning and other costs of doing business. Trade-in values are based on clean units in good condition, with all original standard equipment. Mileage/condition and additional equipment may have a substantial impact on the value shown above.

I personally would not do it. If you are thinking of going that route then I suggest that you find a bagger with less miles on it or sell your bike outright and buy a used bagger with less miles on it.

Thanks for the input. I don't think I'm going to do it. They said it needs a base gasket, drive belt, battery, and windshield screws. They were asking $8,000 for it.

I'm going to hold out for something with less miles. Thanks for all your comments.

i believe that resale on harleys has been going down in the past year or two, because harley did flood the market with too many bikes. the economy kinda screwed up their supply/demand figures. and now that the touring big twins have gained such popularity, all the 30 year old accountants, engineers, etc can afford them. but ya know, in the same breath, the repo man has been very busy lately too. if you can be patient, the right bike that you really want will come along. being impatient can cost a lot of money. that's my thoughts anyway. do what you want to though, i't your bike, and your time frame you're dealing with.
