Default Lighter stopped working.

Not sure how, but the lighter, that was working on my 05 FLHT stopped. Noticed it when we tried to use the Tom Tom for the 1st time. How do I fix it, I'm assuming it's simply a fuse, and did the Tom Tom cause it to go out. It may have been out prior to that, and I just didn't notice it as it was the first time in a long time that I went to use it. Thanx.

Check your fuse first, if it blows again then you may have a short in the wiring or the lighter is bad. Do not think the GPS will blow your fuse as I think the GPS has a fuse built into the lighter adapter and it will be smaller then the light fuse.

Basically a process of elimination......

First thing I'd do is check to see if you have 12v to the center contact in the lighter housing. If you have access to a 12v test lamp or multimeter, connect the ground from the test lamp (or meter) to a known GOOD ground on the bike and check the center contact in the housing being careful not to touch the side housing with the tester. If there is no voltage then check the fuse. If there is 12v to the center contact, move the tester's ground clip to the outer rim of the housing and see if you have 12v. If no voltage then you are dealing with a poor ground for the housing itself.

If you do have voltage in both situations then I'd start looking at the male end connector of the GPS plug.

The lighters will just wear out because they are exposed to weather conditions. No direct water but close. They will rust on the inside or with use will get dirty, due to the eliminates they are exposed to.
They are inexpensive so replacing it is not much $$$ but will give you freedom of mind. Even cleaning is only temporary once they get this way.

Yes you should do a test with a multimeter for voltage and ground, a test lamp will help but you can not check the ground very well.

Fuse on mine went out and i noticed a little corrosion on a couple of them so i pulled and replaced all of them and coated with dielectric grease.

If the checks like Joe recommends verifies that there is no power to the socket (with the ignition on), then I would check the lighter connections behind the fairing. Do the same checks looking for voltage on the spade connector to the center of the socket and ground on the spade connector going to the outer part of the socket.

I doubt it's just a fuse because the fused circuit that feeds the lighter also feeds other noticeable loads. At least that's the case with the '07s.

Thanx. Oh, and emwolb, it's an electra glide, not a goldwing, and I never got to use the tom tom, but would if it worked, you know, on 900+ mile days, no need for one for the bar hopping you probably do though poser.
