They are talking about tanny components, not the shift lever shaft on the front of the primary case. I had a leak at the output drive gear and the shop tore the primary down, removed the clutch and disassembled the tranny to replace the seals. At least that was my understanding. Cost me $350 but no more leaks....yet. . Read on this forum that HD uses a single lip seal when a double lip seal is available and is more robust. Wish I would have know before I had the repair done. I'm sure they just put the same type back in. Seems to be a very common problem. Maybe it's designed to fail.

My buddy just went through the same thing. Found two problems. Shifter shaft seal and also found the cover had a bad area where the milling was not smooth. Both leaks stopped. Unfortunatly the dealer could not seem to do this in three tear downs.

And that my friend is why you are your very best mechanic. Get a service manual, read it, follow the directions, and there's very little you can't do. If you happen to need a tool and can't borrow it, buy it, you'll still be ahead of the game, and you'll have it to help somebody else or to fix your next problem. Just a thought. These leaks are really annoying, but getting them finally fixed is extremely rewarding. Give it a shot. The absolute worst that could happen is that you have to take it in to get it finished for some reason, and you're still ahead of the power curve. Button it up yourself.
