I am buying a GPS and would appreciate some feedback on which one to buy. I see that HD now has a version of the 660 out. So this means that HD now has two versions branded, 550 and 660.
Actually, the 660 has fewer features than the 550. That's why it costs less than the 550. The 660 is not capable of receiving satellite radio. The 550 is xm ready, (requiring a special $200 xm antenna. )
I have the 550. It is great, but a little bulky. If you don't care about xm radio, the thinner, bigger screen of the 660 is nice to have. (but not necessary.) I find the 550's 3.5 inch screen to be very usable. The non- HD 550 comes with a car kit. I got mine last year at Abe's of Maine for $640. I later added every HD dealership in the country through a point of interest POI website supplied by Zumoforums.com. I believe those POIs come preloaded on the HD branded unit. Not a good reason to spend an additional $300 to get the HD 550.IMHO.
Buy the standard Garmin Zumo 550 or 660 for a lot less than the "HD version" and load the HD Dealership POIs from the Zumo Forum.
I have a 550 but if the 660 were available at the time I would have bought it for the larger screen and less expense. If you want XM with the 550, it will cost another $200 or so for the antenna that also has to be mounted on the bike.
I suggest you join the Zumo Forum and do a quick read of some threads there. It's a good source for comparing the two.
Harley's Zumo 550 does now come with both the motorcycle and car cradles and mounts. See updated part number 92357-08A.
Harley's Zumo 660 (which I just ordered for myself) comes with the car cradle and mount, and the motorcycle cradle but no motorcycle mount. Harley offers a separate handlebar or fairing mount, but I opted to buy a RAM mount instead.
Retail on Harley's 660 is actually less than Garmin's 660, because of the missing motorcycle mount, so that will more than make up for the price of the motorcycle mount.
I have the 550 w/ an XM antennae. The 550 is mounted using the H-D switch housing mount and the antennae is inside my fairing mounted on amp (I have an '09 Classic that I traded my '07 Deuce in for). I love this set-up. The 550 is very user friendly and the XM radio is great to listen to. I purchased everything through e-bay to get the best pricing.
