Default Cams and other stuff

I just got a pair of cams (Screaming Eagles 204) and as my machine has only done 3500 miles (2001 RK) was wondering what else I would need to make my bike more power midrange, I will gather more parts as and when and if my cams are soft and need replacing, I will do a stage 2 job on her. I presume that's 1550 barrels, carb and filter etc.
I have Screaming eagle slip ons at the moment and the filter is a reusable Harley/K&N type. Is the filter a stage1 or do they all come with that type?

wow man, that's only 389 miles per year. you gotta get that thing out and get it broke in. i bet it's a nice looking bike. yes, if it's the oiled mesh type of air filter, it's the right one for performance. now get out there and get some miles on it, you got a lot of time to make up on your bike.

bikehunter,

I believe that you have the K&N type of filter which was not stock on the bike. You can get the necessary kit (spray cleaner and oil) for this at Autozone.

As an owner of a 2001 Roadking, I went with with Joe Minton 95" build recommendation instead of a the standard "Stage 2" - after my inner cam chain tensioner wore out 24,000 miles). You are a long way from worrying about worn tensioners but, when the time comes, I recommend that you consider it as a Stage 2 option. I am glad that I did.

Until then, enjoy your King!

What is included in the stage 2 kit?

The Stage II for this year (if it's an FLHRI) is the beefier clutch spring, 95" barrels, SE203 cams and a factory download that enrichens the fuel mixture to work with this component grouping. I had it installed at delivery and it was a far cry from the stock FLHRI that I first road-tested. That being said, more bang-for-the-buck can be achieved by seeking a reputable idependent, boring your existing cylinders for new pistons, upgrading the cams to a better setup than the SE203 and adding a tuning device rather than the factory download. After that it's on to gear-driven cams and headwork, and enlarging the throttle body, the Stage III-type upgrade for this model year. The '01 does have a forged crank that was discontinued a year or two later.
The '01 in EFI form carries the final version of the Magneti-Marelli ECM, and typically are trouble-free (unlike their earlier cousins) and modification friendly. MM is still a major contractor for today's HD factory bikes, although the ECM contractor has been changed to the Delphi unit and the dual-throat manifold for a single. If you have a carburated bike (they're great!) then jetting modifications would replace the download or tuning device. BTW, Pingel offers a wheel disc for about $30 that allows the '00 to '02 to run the '03-and-up 142 mm rear tire with no modifications. The '01 is a fine bike and my modifications from stock to stage III+ show it can be done right with compatible parts and run trouble free. I'm at 101.7 hp...

The bike is carbed, and the paint is a rich red/black.

Many thanks for the info, I run a carb model and the frame states 1999 but was sold in the UK in 2001, if that helps.
