Does anyone know if the fairing mount on the GPS 550 can be mounted
on either the left or the right side? I'd like to get this unit to replace my
current Quest model (mounted on the right). It would be nice if the
550 would go in it's place.
I understand the newer 660 only mounts on the left side of the fairing.
Good question...I have the fairing mount and had the dealer do the install when I bought the bike and it went on the left side. Personally I prefer it there so I can make minor adjustments (like skipping a mp3 I don't want to hear) while riding and not having to take my hand off the throttle.
This installation kit is designed for handlebar mounting of the Road Tech™ GPS System on most Harley-DavidsonŽ models. Mounted to the left-side handlebar control clamp, the bracket accepts the slide-in connection cradle for the Road Tech™ GPS System. Also accepts Handlebar Mount Cradle P/N 91667-06.

i believe the OP means this mount [see thumb-nail] not a handle bar mount and it will only mount on the left side of the fairing. my guess is they want it there because then you won't have to remove your hand from the throttle and you also have quick access to the front brake.
btw the GPS shown is a Garmin 450 which came in silver i painted with Duplicolor trim paint the unit was $350.00 much cheaper than the HD unit and yes i know about the extra features on the HD/550 that i wouldn't use anyway.
Yeppers...that is the same mount I have on mine. I like the 550...especially being able to plug in a 4GB memory card full of MP3's and play that over the sound system. And having all the HD dealers in the US in the thing isn't a bad deal either.
In total honesty...while I like having the thing, I usually ride with it turned off more than anything else...still when the need arises, it is a lot easier than trying to read a map.
