Default 5 and 10 k check ups

I do my own wrenching on my bike. I keep records of oil changes written in my owners manual. is this enough to ensure my warranty coverage? or do i have to take to dealer for recommended service at every 5000 mile interval?

Trying to save a few bucks here and there where I can (in car business) and really do not want to spend 300 dollars on labor for something I have the know how to do. That being said, I do not want to risk my coverage for 300.oo either.

Your thoughts? especially those of you that work for a dealer.

Thanks...I love this forum.....

i do all of my own work as well, and what I was told, is that you have to keep your receipts. Now, my dealer told me they had to be receipts of HD oil and filters, but I use Amsoil. I do not see where they can tell you what oil to put, as long as you use the proper weight. Anyway, I keep a book, aside from my manual, write the date, AND the mileage, because HD will try to get you by saying, oh you didn't chnage the pil within a certain time period, and that is why the oil broke down. So, I writ eboth down, and a staple a copy of my receipt to that page. I keep this up even after the warrenty as well, it helps with resale. People like to see that you take care of your stuff.

Doing your own work will NOT void the warranty but I know from experience that some dealers are pickier about this than others. Carefully documenting regular maintenance is a great idea and would only help in the event you are working with a stickler of a dealer and if they have to run it up the HD ladder for warranty approval.

There are federal laws in regards to this to protect the consumer. HD can't void your warranty because you do the maintenance or use non-HD oil.

+1. Also, I took my to my dealer and asked for the 10k maintenance, but don't do the oil in all three holes since I will do that myself, and the dealer only charged me only $56 for the 10k. They quoted me at $120 by the way.

I do all my own maintenance as well. I have been told about the same thing from my dealership. Save all the receipts and keep good records. Thinking about getting the extended warranty. The paperwork I read about the extended warranty mentioned the receipts.

I go to the Harley web site under the owners tab and get the service check up by vin# and mileage. I print it out and it goes to the garage along with my service manual. I check both check lists off. I date and put the actual mileage on the printed sheet and file that with my receipts. By doing everything both lists call for, with receipts and documention I should be covered.

I had several services done on both mine and the wife's bike, paid the price only to find out the neck bearings had never had a drop of grease, the belt was loose, and other little things. I thank Savannah HD for finally giving me the reason to purchase my lift.
