I had a K&N with stock air box on bike before installing a PCV. In order to better match the fuel map I installed a Screaming Eagle Air Filter. Now I'm seeing a little drop off of the top speed on the bike. I removed it to clean it.
Question #1? I've misplaced the instructions that came with the filter. How or what do you use to clean it.
Did you just replace the Filter with the SE filter?? If so I would recommend replacing the backing plate. With the stock setup you are still restricting air flow. For cleaning the SE filter just use a mild soap and wash it, dont submerse the filter, it takes a while to dry. Do not oil the filter either, put in dry. AND no compressed air to dry, it can damage the filter.
MAINTENANCE
Air Cleaner Element Maintenance
NOTES
This is a dry air filter. Do not apply oil to the filter element.
When servicing the air cleaner, apply Loctite 243 (blue) to
threads of all fasteners.
1. Remove air cleaner cover and inspect
the filter element every 5000 mi (8000 km), or more
often under dusty conditions.
2. Clean filter element as follows:
a. Remove and wash element by immersing it, on edge,
in a shallow pan containing enough Air
Cleaner/Degreaser to cover no more than 3/4 the
depth of the filter pleats. Do not let dirty solution get
inside the element. Carefully "roll" the element in the
solution around its perimeter until the entire outer
surface of the filter pleats has been soaked.
b. Remove filter element from cleaner/degreaser and
allow five minutes for the cleaner to dissolve the dirt.
c. From the inside out, rinse the element with cold water.
Shake off excess water, and allow the element to air
dry. Do not dry with compressed air.
3. Install air cleaner element and cover.
No the backing plate is gone. The K&N I orginally used was to replace the stock filter only. The backing plate was still in place at that time. When you compare the K&N I have to the SE it looks like it doesn't have the same area of filtering medium as the SE. The SE is deeper and round. The K&N is shallower and more oval in shape. Cleaned it according to the instructions provided here. Will probably reinstall it.
