Yes, they can fix it if you stay with'em long enough. I had this problem for 6 months, dealer tried numerous things. New starter clutch, new stock compensator with extra springs added, worked over the PCIII on the dyno, changed timing, changed fuel, changed anything that might effect the starting. Still sounded like a thrashing machine often when I tried to start it because the starter would kick out and try to re-engage. TERRIBLE. spit back thru the throttle body. turn over and over and never start. I WAS SICK OF IT. Every one said "gotta put compression releases" or "gotta put a heavy duty starter". They finally got hold of a tech at HD that told them to install the new HD SCREAMIN' EAGLE COMPENSATOR and that would fix it....and.....THAT DID IT. I have started and ridden it several times over the past 3 days, not one time did it fail to start right up and do as it should. Once again my faith is restored in HD. The tech that installed it said it had to be built, came in about a dozen parts and pieces, unlike the two or three in the stock version. Much heavier duty and does the trick the stock one could not do. PACO
I am running stock heads, 103 jugs, flat top pistons, and SE255 cams. PCIII, Fulsac duels with Rush 2" mufflers, SE stage 1 breather kit. Dynoed at 86hp, 105 torque. Does great, just had a helluva time getting it to start without sounding like it was coming to pieces. SE compensator seems to have fixed that after many other things tried. Was going for SE compression releases next if this didn't fix it, but don't think I'll have to do that now. PACO
I had the hot starting problem, and one guy suggested starting the bike as soon as you turn on the ignition -- not waiting for the engine light to go out. That has worked 100% for me. I just completed a 6000km trip to Sturgis and back, and the only time it thrashed and banged was the one time I let the engine light go out.
I'm glad they fixed it for you Paco. My latest starter fix was a new high output HD starter. No warranty as the machine gun sound from the factory starter was only occasional, and naturally wouldn't do it for the service tech. Now, HD has a service buliten out stating the rattling sound is normal, so, no warranty anyway untill it completely quits. I paid the price for a new high torque HD starter. What the hel, they needed a stimulous package. so far so good.
I'm having new heads w/ACRs installed as soon as they come in. I'll mention the SE Compensator and see if they have a service bulletin for it so it'll be installed under warranty.
