I also tried the "start before the lite goes out" trick, worked about 5 % of the time. I feel compression releases would probably do the trick as it would take the pressure off the pistons created by the SE255 cams ramping up onto compression stroke quicker than the factory cams, which is part of the problem. According to the HD Tech as I understood it, the crank position sensor tells the coil to fire after a few thousands of a second. With the stock compensator, too much slack was in the system allowing the crank sensor to re-activate after having starting this few thousands of a second counting sequence, thus going back to zero and starting the counting sequence over again. This caused the starter to kick out, then kick back in causing the extreme grinding noise. Also caused the "turn over but not start" situation and the "spit back thru the throttle body" situation.
I don't know if this is a cure all for everyone, but at this point, it has been a 100% cure for mine. I have probably close to 50 starts on it from stone cold to 95 degree weather hot engine starts, not even a hint of a kick back, grind or turn over several times without starting. It works just like it did when it was a brand new 2007 model 96ci back in Sept. of 06 when purchased.
At this point I do not know the part number as I don't have my receipt with me, but any dealer can look it up for you, it is the 2007 or newer Screamin' Eagle compensator. Also not sure of the cost as I have an extended warranty and we are still in process of dealing with all of that to see what all gets paid.
It all points back to your CCP and the duration of the SE255 cams. I have over 20K with my SE251 cams with 195 CCP and NEVER have a starting issue
My CCP with the 103 build is 185 psi.
I'm tending to think now my stock starter itself had a weak bendix spring, or some internal solenoid intermettant connection making and breaking rapidly on occasion. I'm hoping the new high torque starter has eliminated the starting issues. If not, the compensator is next.
I am disappointed all these starting fixes - CR's, HT starter, and now compensator weren't all offered in the stage II 103 kit. Sure would have saved me a lot of time and trouble. I'd had it all done from the git-go.
