It's becomes your best friend. There isn't ever any thought of trading it in. It's time for a new bike when the old one is so decrepid that rebuilding it won't bring it back to life or you've just totalled it to the point that it is unrecognizable. Giving it up is an emotional strain, like shooting your horse.

I admire the fact that you can afford to even think about trading up. But why?
+1 the dealer already knows he has a sucker. (Upgrading and 08 to and 10) So basically he is driving. Also there is a major misperception that HD is in financial straits or going out of business like GM. Reality they are a sound company with a sound business plan, with dealers that know how to shake every dollar out of our jeans. And lastly they have been making adjustments to their business in relation to the maket place (adjustments that will keep them profitable).

Dealers are in business to make money it is just up to you how much you are going to allow them to make off of you. I do find it ridiculous to add ademdums for over MSRP on anything.
I am in the auto business and we sell over 300 units every month in some cases we take short deals and in other we take loosers the bottom line is that the avg has to be at a certain number at months end.

You might want to try the more popular phrasing "Butter my butt and call me Biscuit"

Damn, no one warned me that this grammar police thing was contagious.

If I had your money, I would buy a new bike every couple of years, just not trade it in. Kind of like Elvis and Cadillacs. Maybe one of these days you could toss one of those "old" bikes of yours my way for a decent price.
Carl--- sorry man--- got your name mixed up with another post-- anyway--- appreciate your comments---

don't mean to mislead anyone--- I am NOT rich--- I do OK... very fortunate to have a great job, decent credit, and a supportive wife, who loves to ride---

but to be honest, she is more like you... she thinks I'm nuts to get rid of 'Sonny' (her name for him)--- as far as she is concerned, he is just the way she likes him- says if I want more power, upgrade, more bling, upgrade, more whatever, keep Sonny and upgrade--

and she is very skeptical about a new SG or an Ultra--- but it is my call and she supports that--- so, no final decision yet, but I am leaning towards an 09 SG or RK, mainly to get the fresh waranty, new frame, and a new look... hey, if I don't like it, well, you know, wait a couple of years and trade it in...

The bike has ABS and Cruise.
I would think most dealers would be ready to deal, but there are still places around here that charge over MSRP.

very good to know, thanks for the info---

They asked the salesman if they could get a deal for buying two SGs at the same time and pay cash.
Cash doesn't impress anybody anymore and it costs the dealer all the money they make financing. That's why they offered what they did.

I'm thinking I'm gonna keep my 04 and drive it like I stole for as many years as I can, and if I get the itch to get a new one once this one is paid off, I'll get me a used 09 in 2012.
