Im in business for myself so I know everyone is trying to make a living and Im not one of those buyers that will squeeze a seller to the point that they will make no money. However I was looking to buy my dad a used 1200 custom sporty. I saw some 2009's at the dealer for around $9,500 and 2010's for $9,750. The mileage was between 1000-2750 miles. I tried negotiating but they dropped the prices by about $500 on each of them. I was told "we paid top dollar for them and cant sell them for any less because we will lose our shirts"
I went on Kelly blue book and saw a trade in on a 2009 on a very good bike is $5,950 and on a 2010 $6,450. Im sure they didnt pay that much, maybe a few hundred lower. And the retail should be $8,150 and $9,000 on these bikes. And thats where the negotiating should begin. Am I sounding like some penny pinching *** or am I making sense. Because the way the dealer made me feel its as if I was wrong for asking a lower price and then I see what kelly blue book said so now I feel like they want to take advantage of me. Mind you I just picked up a 2010 SG from them 4 weeks ago. Yes they gave me a $2k discount on the bike but I spent an additional $8,000 in aftermarket parts. So they did not lose any money on me what so ever.

Didn't HD have a sporty buyback deal where they would give you what you paid new to trade up to a big twin? So now they are stuck with sportys they have to much in?

Ok I was off by using KBB on the 2009 by $35.00. And the $10,155 is on the high side. The NADA range is between $7990-10,155. on a 2010. Meanwhile the 2009's NADA is between $6,750-$8115. Either way they only want to drop the pricing by $200-$300. Not worth it for me when I can buy a brand new one for the same price as what they are offering me on a used one. To me its just bad business.
Maybe you need to look at another dealership? 2k off last years model is not that great of a deal. JMO

A dealership is the worst place to buy a used bike. Dealerships here in Kansas City still have left over 09's they are trying to dump, so yes, definitely do some shopping around.
When I got in the market for a Harley I first looked at used bikes from individuals. I found one I liked and talked to my bank and what I found out is most banks will only finance 80% of LOW BOOK on a motorcycle. Low book on a 13,000.00 motorcycle was $10,00.00, 80% = $8,000.00 And of course no Harley owner would sell the baby for 2k below what they think it's worth.
For the bike I was looking at I would have had to come up with 5K out of pocket.
I looked at used bikes form the HD Dealer but they were 2 to 3 k over what they were going for from individuals. But they had no problem getting financing whatever the price.
Given the finance rates they wanted for used bikes it only made sence to me to by NEW and the payments worked out to be near the same as buying used.
Now I wish I was one of those people that could walk in and drop CASH for whatever I want, but I'm not.

Well I got charged a flat $18k for my 2010 street glide plus tax and registration and it has ABS. No prep or freight charges. And this is Long Isand NY so I think I did pretty well on the deal. They also took off 15% on all my parts and service. So my $8000 in aftermarket parts was already was discounted 15%

HD had a program going that would pay full value for these bikes if the person was to trade it in on an upgrade!!! How are you paying for this cash?? or finance??? Cash is king!!! The retail price is a start!! keep searching you will get the deal your looking for!!!
