Well my kid busted one of the cast latches for my tour pak yesterday... Anyone change one of these out??? It don't look like it will be too big a deal...
My daughter felt so bad I tried to play it down to her and told her not to worry but I know shes upset. I didn't take a good look at it to see if its a easy fix or not. The latches are a cheap cast and if its a hassle I may look to upgrading them to something more durable... I remember the dealer telling me to be carefull with them when I bought the bike.
If you are referring to the latch (not the hinge), it's easy; just four screws. I don't recall if they're torx, allen, etc. but you shouldn't have any difficulty replacing the broken latch.
She said she just tried to close it after she put her helmet in the tour pak and it cracked and fell to the floor.
I remember when I bought the bike my salesman showed me the palm method of closing the latches. They don't line up as well as they use to when the bike was new. I never even seen one broke... But I have now!
Thanks for giving me some piece of mind... I was laying down and couldn't get it out of my head... By the sounds of what you described I should be able to replace it.
I've owned two Ultra tour paks in the past three years and dissasembled both for painting. The latch that attaches to the bottom of the tour pak is very easy to replace; the catch that attaches to the lid is more difficult because it uses two blind rivets.
My broken piece is on the bottom part of the tour pak latch. I just had to go and check it out... Now maybe I'll be able to get some sleep.
Damm think just kept buggin' me.
Thanks for the info.
Had two of them break in a six month period...replacement is easy and fast...less then 5 minutes. Cost of the bottom portion of the latch was around 12.00 when I did mine 2 years ago..
Normally, the reason these break is from overloading the pak, and having to put pressure on the top to close it. Not weight, but volume of loading. That or something too large that has to be pushed down with the lid in order to close. When this happens, the vibration of the bike, causes cracks in the stressed latch..
Well if I can get out of the dealership for that kinda money it'll be a great day... You know what the say: HD stands for hundred dollar;
Thank you my fellow Michiganian!
One of mine broke at 25k miles for no apparent reason. It's cheap pot metal and I think the vibration of the lid eventually fatigues it. Easy, cheap replacement. I'm going to regard them as almost a wear item.
