Default Bar Change ??

For those who have undertaken changing bars with internal wiring, how hard was it, any special tools or anything. I have an 09 RG and am going to standard Yaffe bagger bars. Thanks in advance

Not too hard at all. Road Glide is actually a little easier to do than the batwing. I've done mine twice and a bud's road glide recently

I guess the wiring part of it is a bit scary to me. You have to pull all the wires out of the plug dont you?

Yes, but you use a paper clip or other tool to pop the pins out. Write the wiring color chart down prior to doing so. It's easy, really

Spray a little WD40 or something like that on a rag then wipe on wires before sliding thru
the bars makes this alot easier to.

Deutcsh connectors are I think the most easy to take apart. Procedure is in the service manual. pry off the face side (side opposite actual wires) look inside and move retention tang enough to allow the pin to slip out by pulling on the wire. Reverse the process to put back together. If you have to lengthen your wires be sure to stagger your splices as you do not want any more then 1 wired spliced any any given distance down the wire cluster or else things will begin to get too thick especially when they are entering or exiting the bars.

I suppose the degree of dificulty would be determined by the curve of the bars. My 16" Chubby bars were no problem.

How does the throttle by wire mechanism work? I'm curious because I'll be chaning my bars out to mini-apes early next month.

You're assuming you have to use a kit (which requires pulling the connectors). You could, instead, just snip and solder your own extensions in. The correct guage qire at the auto parts store and shrink wrap at Walmart cost less than $10. Here's my DIY bar swap in case any of it could be of use to you: https://www.hdforums.com/forum/touri...e-install.html

Thanks for the replies, i am pretty handy so i do believe that i am going to attempt this. I may wait till winter so if it does end up taking a bit longer it wont cut into my riding time!
